cleaning stainless saute' pan

Hubby decided to fry potatoes in my new stainless saute' pan.
/sigh
Anyone have any good suggestions on cleaning the black area left
behind after washing?

Bon Ami, Barkeepers Friend or a simple stainless steel scrubbing ball.

I have some Bon Ami. I'll give that a try. Thanks!

A good scrubbing with Barkeeper's Friend or a similar product. You must
add a good dose of elbow grease.

BarKeepers friend works but also try reheating the pan, and then add
something acidic like lemon juice or orange juice, splash of wine,
tomato juice, whatever and scrub the pan with the edge of a flat wooden
spoon or spatula. I usually do that right after I'm done cooking or as
part of the dish and the pans come perfectly clean no matter what was
stuck before and all that fond goes into the dish.

I'm not exactly sure of what you've got there, but I've used a baking
soda paste - wet the pan, sprinkle baking soda heavily, let it stand
several hours or overnight - with great success.
