Putting it by on a Monday

Putting it by on a Monday

This afternoon I am putting up the last of the winter broccoli, three
quart bags full. We sold the last three cabbages at the Farmers Market
Saturday a week ago, along with about three quarts of the last of the
kumquats. All the cauliflower is gone but we are still getting sugar
snap peas. Will probably pick and put up some of those this week too.

It is starting to warm up here and the azaleas, fruit trees, and redbuds
are starting to bloom along with the Carolina jasmine (which is an
invasive plant in our climate). I suspect it won't be much longer before
we are planting tomatoes, peppers, etc in the main garden and I will
have to spray the fruit trees again pretty soon and possibly put up the
bird netting.

The blackberry vines are putting out new leaves. The original six plants
were planted in January 2007 and we got maybe a half cup of berries. Now
that I have rooted some of the runners we have maybe 24 plants along the
west fence and are hoping for enough to make jams, jellies, and some
cobbler. Hope springs eternal in the gardeners heart.

Life is good.

George

Right now it's a very wet heaven. Rained all day yesterday and all night
last night, just a slow drizzle.Supposed to rain all day today. I had to
equip Tilly Dawg with waterwings just so she could go out in the backyard.
