Jammin' it by

Well them cherries looked good, and tasted alright, and I measured two or
three times. I still didn't have enough for the second batch, so I rounded
out that last cup with a small container (4 slices) of crushed pineapple,
drained well. Burp. Anyway, it's a nice mix and both batches firmed up real
nice and there a few with that layered look we all hope for....
I wish I had orchards closer, but ain't no sense at all in driving 125
miles 1-way to pick my own cherries for a couple batches or six. Or maybe
there is. Those grocery cherries we get are the table variety and I really
should be using the sours. And I don't like the look of the canned sours -
yucky color fer sure.

It's a lot farther than that to any cherries growing from down here
Edrena. My fruit crop is shot this year, blossom drop caused by a very
light light frost. I'm watering the blackberries like crazy as they are
blooming and setting fruit like crazy. I may just give up on growing my
own fruit and berries and just do like you do and buy them. There are
several pick your own blueberry patches around here but I'm too lazy to
pick them so I just buy a couple of gallons each year for freezing. I
like them better that way. Looks like we will have a bumper crop of figs
again so more fig jam, one of our favorites and the descendants like
them too.

How's Ol' Whiskerface doing nowadays?

How're You George? Not overdoing it are ya? Do y'all get any elderberries
down there? I remember in missouri they were all over the place, along with
mulberries, kid forage food.
Bob's alright. Not as much progress as hoped, but looking forward to
outpatient PT for strenghth & conditioning. These dry dusty windy days we've
had are the pits for him.
He like the cherry jam.
I ran across that spicy fig jam I made a long while ago. Tastes like
mincemeat, but no meat for my vegetarian relatives.

Fat as a hawg and twice as lazy. Gained 70 lbs since my hospital stay
last year. Everyone says "My, don't you look good." Got no energy, can't
stand the heat and we're in the low nineties now. Can't squat down or
stoop due to arthritis and the pot belly.

Lots of elderberries around here along all the roadsides but we don't
pick them. Way too many chemicals in the air alongside the highways and
byways. I finally took down a good-sized thicket we had growing in the
backyard. Never could make elderberry jelly worth a hoot and the wine I
made one year took forever to finish. Just ain't worth it.

Been there, done that, way too many times. Just tell him to keep on
keeping on like we said back in the hippie years.

You willing to share the recipe? Looks like the only fruit we're going
to have is a lot of figs. I've made fig jam, fig preserves for years but
last year used the old sixties recipe for strawberry fig jam, ie use
jello to change the flavor. Only I made it with raspberry jello as I
don't like strawberries. This year I'm gonna make cherry fig jam just
for a switch.

None of my relatives, that I speak to, are vegetarians. We're all
declared carnivores.

Miz Anne is in Maryland visiting her soon-to-be 100 year old Momma and
attending her 50th high school reunion. Me and Tilly Dawg is batching it
which means we can eat what we want for a whole week. Yee Ha!

Not jelly, but friends we visit often in Sweden make a delicious
summer drink from elderflowers, sometimes with added lemon juice, and a
yummy ice cream flavored with concentrated juice from the berries.

Elderflower Champagne

Mix 1.5 lbs sugar, 2 tbsp wine vinegar, the juice and grated rind
of 1 lemon.
Add 8 pints cold water, and 3 large heads of elder flowers. Stir
and let stand for 2 days.
Then strain and store in screw-top bottles - leave at least 2
inches air space at the top of each bottle! Drink after 2 weeks - don't
store any longer, unless you can seal the bottles with wired-down corks.

I used to make this many years ago, but I got this one from Sacha on another
group!

Naw, nobody but me and the dawg like her. <VBG> We don't socialize much
with our neighbors or the folks at the church we go to. We're not stuck
up or anything just have different interests.

She will be home Tuesday afternoon anyhoo. The yard will need mowing by
then and I'm getting tired of watering all them potted plants she has on
the patio. We're not getting much rain at all, maybe an eighth of an
inch last night when we need about two inches.

She's an artist Brian, probably an elf with a sketch pad hiding on top
of the kitchen cabinets. Miz Anne is a technophobe and tends to try to
live in the EARLY twentieth century instead of the twenty-first.

Hmm you are probably right about the elf. Are you sure it isn't hiding in
Tilly Dawgs collar? :))

Tilly Dawg don't wear no stinking collar, they drive her crazy. If we
leave the property she has to wear one but otherwise I get tired of
watching her try to scratch the collar off and then bitch about it. '-})
