False Economy :-(
False Economy :-(
I've been picking up 1/2 pint jars at a nearby thrift shop for 40 cents
each thinking I'm getting a deal. With state and local tax, that's
$5.11 for 12. But they need lids and rings. That's $3.12. That's
$8.23. A case of new jars costs me $7.44 with taxes added‹and I don't
get a box or carton to store the filled jars in.

I believe I've just shifted my buying habits to what they were‹new jars
from Fleet Farm. Incidentally, the *sale* price on a case of regular
half pint jars was $6.49 (against the regular $6.99 price). Not the
sale it used to be. Another sign of the times, I guess.

You can laugh NOW, but someday those may be priceless antiques. FWIW,
I'm paying $.27 at the Goodwill store and I make sure the ones I buy
have rings.
We're making apricot jam this year from our own trees, provided we can
scare off the squirrels. Man, Sure-Jel is expensive these days!

I figured you wouldn't. Our descendants eat most of our canned goods and
they know they had better return jars and lids or Big Daddy gets upset.

We were in the local Big Lots the other day and all they had were cases
of quart jars. No longer in a box, looks like a beer tray with the jars
shrink wrapped to it. Makes you want to cry. I'm hanging on to my old
boxes, they may soon become collectors items and I can sell them on eBay.
