What's a good double bass CD?

Hello,

I'm looking for some good CDs (DVD-A and SACD are fine too) that have a good
recording of an acoustic upright double bass (particularly in regards to
strumming).

Thanks in advance for you references.

Best regards,

-DJ

THE double-bass recording that everybody seems to agree upon is the Gary Karr
"Adagio d' Albinoni" with Harmon Lewis on Pipe organ. Cisco Gold CD # CCISG
8003. This CD is available at:

I highly recommend it, it sounds great!

"Long Dissonant Romance" by the Bottom Line Duo has all the virtuosity
of a good Gary Karr performance, with a wide variety of music from
serious to fun, and is one of the best recordings in my collection.

You should check Aurora with Peter Erskine, Marty Krystal and Buell
Neidligner.
Denon CY-73148.
Simply awesome!

That seems to be a rare CD to get hold of - Amazon UK only have used
copies, the cheapest of which is a cool 35 pounds - ouch!

Thanks everyone! I will be sure to at least give some of these an audition.
I really appreciate the time taken to share your recommendations with me.

Happy listening,

-DJ

Two recomendations come to mind:

1) Tom Waits "Small Change" - I use the second track "Step Right Up" to
audition speakers. The walking jazz bassline with little else going on
really gives a workout to the midbass. Any frequency response anomalies
in that range become apparent very quickly.

This record was recorded live-to-two-track in the studio with minimal
processing. Nice disc.

2) Richard Hartshorn - Bach - Six Solo Suites - Centaur Records

The Bach Cello Suites performed on the double bass. Simply amazing.
Not a "pure" double bass recording in that in order to play it as
written he had to tune the strings differently than the standard tuning.

One of my favourite albums too. I know it's daft, but I love the
sound of the match being lit before "Small Change" itself, and the
solo saxophone.

Also check out Solstice by Ralph Towner. Eberhard Weber's highly
unusual bass playing is quite something, and this is a beautifully
recorded disc, as you'd expect from the ECM label.

I own and enjoy many ECM records, including this one (although I haven't
listened to it in a few years - note to self: give Solstice a spin soon.)

Bear in mind, though, that Manfred Eicher really likes his artificial
reverb and his tubes. His recordings are pretty, but they're not really
high-fi - they sound "better" than real life. Which is ok by me - I'll
take pleasant over accurate any day.

I don't disagree. Under the right circumstances "pleasant" give a better
musical experience. After all, we aren't listening to test-tones, we're
listening to music and anything which enhances the pleasure of that pass time
is OK by me.

This same question appeared in a different NG, to which I posted this
recommendation:

For others which might be interested in the same subject, after going to
"discography", you can audition samples from many of his releases.
