Best electrostatic loudspeaker?

Best electrostatic loudspeaker?

Hi:

I'm looking for an electrostatic loudspeaker that has the highest treble
response and can handle the loudest sounds [without clipping] of its
kind. I am not really a fan of bass. I like treble and would like the
loudspeaker to be able to withstands extreme loudness without clipping.
It should also be handle to best handle already-clipped waveforms
without suffering any damage.

Is there anything close to what I am looking for that I can find in an
audio store?

Thanks a bunch,

Radium

Have you tried the big Martin-Logans?

I am a BIG Martin-Logan fan. I traded my Maggie MG-3As for a pair of M-L
Aeon-i's a number of years back, and recently traded them up to a pair of
Vistas. Flat frequency response, wide dispersion, vanishingly low distortion
(in the ES panels anyway), They are, in my estimation, the most accurate and
musical sounding speakers in their price range.

Vista looks *practical*, see:
www .us.martinlogan,com /specs/vista.html

interesting that they're only 57/11/17" H/W/D,
and only weigh 54 lbs each. :)

interesting that the woofer is only 8",
but you need the fastest cone driver to
match up with the speed of the electrostat

what do they cost per pair?

About 4 grand, I think. I got mine on accommodation so I don't know the
actual "audiophile net".

Not yet, but now that you mentioned it, I'll give it a try.

Dear "Radium"

That question is sort of like asking "what's the best car"?

Well, it all depends on what you're trying to do and where!

ESLs are by their very nature limited in terms of maximum SPL. In order to get
more SPL, they have to be made larger, or more 'cells' utilized. Regardless
there is a practical limit for output that is based on the breakdown voltage of
air, which is what is in the gap between a stator and diaphragm. The ESL runs on
high voltage, literally.

If you want high power, high SPL and extended HF response look into one or more
of the professional SR/PA speakers that use a high power ribbon driver.

Alternately, it is possible, although somewhat difficult unless you have
expertise to put together a horn loaded/compression driver based speaker that
does both HF extension and SPL.

So, your question needs to be framed with the size of the room that you want to
fill, the actual SPL you want at your listening position, the degree of HF
extension you want (and why?) as well as your budget.

That is, if this is a serious inquiry...

I have a pair of Martin Logan SL3's that I bought about 6 years ago. We
relocated shortly after I bought them and for years never had a proper room
to set them up in. I recently refurbished a dedicated "music" room,
installed the Martin Logans along with a Monitor Audio center channel and
Mirage surrounds. Right now everything is powered with a Denon AVR-2808CI
receiver/amp, but I plan on powering the ML's with a dedicated B&K
Components amp.

I wasn't sure about the "surround" but since most recordings are now mixed
in surround, I figured I'd set it up.
My old Dual 1219 turntable was also dusted off (surprisingly it still works
fine) and I use the direct/pure stereo mode for listening to old big band
LP's that I inherited from my father. The system is also set up with a Sony
SACD disk player, plus a regular DVD/CD player. The SACD is amazing.

Anyway, I love the sound of the electrostatics. There's an acoustic
transparency that is very pleasant, producing almost a "3D" effect. I even
tried bi-amping them but surprisingly, they sound better using the
crossovers in the speakers.

I think the newer Vistas are similar in size to the older SL3's that I have
and the price is similar. I think I paid about $3500-$3700 for them, again
about 6 years ago.

I'd like to compare them to a similar sized set of Maggies someday.
