PIONEER RECEIVERS: Which One Do I Keep?

PIONEER RECEIVERS: Which One Do I Keep?

For a few months now, I have been using a vintage Pioneer SX-780
receiver in pristine condition. I have really enjoyed using this
receiver and really like its excellent, warm sound for both analog and
digital sources.

But now fate has smiled upon me and I have just discovered a vintage
Pioneer SX-750, also in pristine condition.

I will keep one of these receivers and sell the other one.

But my question is: Which one should I keep?

I thought I would ask some of you kind people, since it is very
possible that you know some details about these receivers, technical
or otherwise, that I might not know.

I understand that the power amplifier section is slightly different
between the two models. What is the difference? Does the difference
matter, either in sound quality or longevity?

I must admit that I haven't listened extensively to either one of
these receivers, and I certainly haven't made a "head-to-head"
comparison, but I will say that they both look and sound fantastic.

Which one would you keep and why?

Many thanks in advance.....

What a great problem to have. The 750 uses individual transistors
for the amplifier, while I recall the 780 using IC modules.
Silver snobs don't like IC chips, even the analog ones. Some
say the 750 style output design should sound better, but I
suspect that both will sound very good on normal inputs like
FM, tape, and CDs.

The SX-750 also uses STK0050 output devices. Changes out many of them.

With that being the case, then there is no real difference in
the power amps. Since the 750 and 780 are not the most collectable
units in the pioneer line (that would be the big monsters like
the 1250 and 1980), it all boils down to personal preference.
Or keep both in case one goes out. Or set up a 2nd system somewhere
else in the house. Or keep the 2nd one to hand down to your
children.

What would you say if I told you I am listening to a couple of records every
Sunday? I have a Philips turntable with built-in pre amp which is connected
to the game line in of my boom box:_)
