Best Digital Multitrack Under $1000

I'm mainly looking for audio quality, ease of use and highest quality preamps.
4-8 tracks is all I need. And internal CD burning doesn't matter to me either
way.

All those brands : Fostex, Boss, Tascam, Korg, etc. : is there any units
to avoid or units which have highest approval ? Like for example, the Fostex
MR-16 or the Korg D888.

A digital multitrack with preamps does not come with high quality preamps.
Those that come with preamps are made for basement studio practice use.

The fostex mr8hd might be all you need. It dislikes pressure on its
gearbutton while packed. It has the oddity of inverting the signal polarity,
it may or may not mattet.

I don't know all of them.

The Korg D888 appears at at glance to be well thought out. I haven't tried
it and I don't know how it sounds.

You need to tell us what problem you want to solve ... ie. what is it you
want to record? - and also what entire recording process do you envision,
ie. how are you going to mix and edit?

Kind regards

Well, the new 8-channel Sound Devices probably has pretty darn good
preamps, as does the Zaxon Deva, and I imagine the Edirol R44 is OK, but
all of them are above $1,000.

This is a pretty small budget for multitrack recording and there will be
some compromises. Better recommendations can be made if the project is
more precisely defined as to how the recordings will be made, and how
they'll be mixed.

All the preamps will be workable, but not great. They're roughly in
the ballpark of a Mackie or Behringer mixer. Other than that, you're
buying on features.
