mac and fireface
i have a fireface400 and that's a long time i want to buy myself a
macbook so i can record and work outdoors.
the problem is that i noticed (in apple and rme forum) that the latest
macs has a firewire issue interfacing with rme fireface series.
does anyone can tell what he knows about it?
is there a solution cmming up?
any workaround?

There is probably not a solution coming up soon, because Apple is not
really considering it critical.

It's not just the RME fireface... a lot of interfaces are having trouble
with the Mac firewire chipset. And it's a chipset that some PC motherboards
have used also.
Buy an older Mac and you'll be fine. They are rugged and last a good while.

It's not just the RME fireface... a lot of interfaces are having trouble
with the Mac firewire chipset. And it's a chipset that some PC motherboards
have used also.

is there any alternative , even a PC laptop, for this applactions?
i know kraftwerk are preforming with sony vaio
is this laptop strong enough to handle with such things? ( recording
outside, and work with live!)?

If you are working outside, i can recommend the MOTU traveler. I must
confess I had to send the first one back but now the one i have is
working, I'm really happy with it. With the rack ears removed, it's
small enough to go in my backpack, the 4 pre-amps are good and it
works fine with my macbook pro.

Any laptop that uses the Centrino or later chipset will do. Just stay away
from some laptops that used Pentium Mobile processors. There was nothing
wrong with the CPU, but the chipsets could cause problems.
To give an example of the power of a Centrino chipset, I can record 12
channels at 96/24 via the built-in Firewire port on an Asus S5NE, which uses
a 1gHz ULV Centrino CPU.

studio applications to fully evaluate laptops for this, so YMMV..
I sometimes consider a laptop for my own home studio needs, since modern
laptops have gained so much performance in the latter years.
Most importantly, I would read tests about performance, heat issues and
search the net for reports about durability.
Resently, laptops are being build with lowpower multicore cpu's, so the
power might be there. The most resent ones can now take 8GB ram.
Modern 2½" laptop harddrives are getting quite fast and large.
I would consider using an external firewire drive for my audio files.

if it's trus, shame, as I'd prefer using a Mac with Logic Studio.
