Question about fan noise of Crown XS500

Reply from: darrelldklein

I just got a Crown XS500 off e-bay. It seems to work fine, but its
fans sound like little whiney turbines. Not a big deal in a live
sound
environment, but still pretty loud. Way louder than my Altec 9444A.

Does anyone have first hand experience with this amp to know if this
is a sign if impending fan failure or is it normal?
Thanks

Whine is never good. If is a pure tone, it's maybe okay, but if it has
sidebands, it's a bearing that is on its way out.

Go to Ace Hardware and buy a bottle of "Zoom Spout" oil and some white
lithium grease. If your auto parts store carries Mobil 1 racing grease
(the magenta stuff), it's better than the lithium grease.

Take the label off the fan. You will find a plastic tab under there
which conceals the center bearing. Put a drop of oil in there and work
it back and forth, then pack a little lithium grease inside there.

The fans should quiet down, and at the very least you will prevent any
future problems.

Thanks, Scott

I looked for a place to add some grease. I didn't think about taking
the label off. The wierd thing is both fans sound the same, so it's
either okay or they are both about to fail at about the same time.
