pc sound gone

hey,

not sure if this is the right group but, my pc all of a sudden doesn't
produce sound. I went to bed one night, the next day, without changing
anything , the sound just stopped working.

there is an on-board sound card called ac97, and i also have an audigy
card. Neither produce sound either through the speakers or headphones.
Yes I properly enabled/disabled the on-board card through the BIOS
while testing each.

any ideas what happened?

Did you check the device manager via the control panel/system?

THe follwing is for XP. Go to the Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices. In the Volume
tab, ensure that the Mute box isn't checked, and the device volume is up some. Go to the
Audio tab, and see which souncard is the default device for playback. That's the card to
which programs like Winamp, IE, etc. (any program that can't internally choose its
soundcard) will sent audio. If the soundcard you're using has a mixer panel (most internal
soundcards do), invoke it by clicking the "Volume" button on the Audio tab, or by
double-clicking the little speaker in the tray. Make sure that the Wave fader is up and not
muted, as well as the Master Volume. Also, for apps that send MIDI, rather than wav or mp3
sound data, make sure that the SW Synth is also up and not muted.

Make sure your speakers, if external, are on, volume up, and plugged into the green (line
out) jack. Try plugging headphones into the green jack to see if there's audio there. If
so, your speakers were not working.

It broke.

There's a cheap but useful and effective device called the Behringer UCA202.
You plug it in, its drivers are already part of XP so they load
automagically, it is better than just about any onboard audio interface, and
it comes with audio-friendly RCA jacks. Under $30 in lots of stores and
online.
