Making a short XLR cable

Making a short XLR cable

I need to make a short (12") XLR cable to connect my microphone when
mounted on my camcorder. I know how to use a soldering iron, but I don't
know much about cables and shielding, especially for XLR cables. Could
someone recommend the right shielding, gauge, etc. and the pins each lead
should go to?

Thanks.

red lead: Pin 2, positive
white lead: Pin 3, negative
shield: Pin 1, GND

Get some proper microphone cable (2LI2Y AWG 22 for example).

Be sure to use good connectors, Neutrik or Amphenol for example.

Note that the wire colors vary widely between brands
and types of cable. Just be sure to use the same color
for the same pin on each end(!)

Amphenol may be a good brand where Mr. Zuendorf is
writing from (?), but they aren't known for offering decent
XLR connectors in the Westerm Hemisphere. OTOH,
Switchcraft connectors are widely available here in North
America and of decent quality. Neutrik has a reputation
for good XLR (and other connectors) across the planet.

Note that there are places where you can order custom cables
online, also. My favorite vendor is www .redco, com You can
specify exactly what options you want online and see the pricing
instantly. They have a good selection of different cable and
connectors. There are likely also sources of stock 1-foot XLR
cables. Places like www .markertek, com etc.

The old Cannon plant in Australia is now operating under the Amphenol
name and selling some nice XLR connectors. They are NOT the old
two-screw kind that Cannon used to sell (which I kind of miss). They
are ALSO not the Switchcraft clones that Amphenol made in the seventies
either. But they are nice connectors and a lot of folks carry them
and I recommend them as much as the Switchcraft and Neutrik ones.

You never used any recent Amphenol connectors, did you?

Have a look at http :// www .amphenol,com .au/

BTW: I would prefer Amphenol T-series TS and TRS plugs to Neutrik
NP(2/3)X-series plugs.
90% of our customers are more than happy with Amphenol AC3-Plugs, the
rest goes for Neutrik.

Or cut the foot off, leaving one connector attached, and reterminate the
other cut end.

I think that's probably what you meant, Georgie-boy ;-) ....

No, that is actually what he SAID. Perhaps you read it wrong.

No yo read it wrong. He said (but didn't mean) "reterminate the cut
ends", implying there is more than one cut end.

Or he could have meant the 'cut ends' as being the individual ends of wires
on the single cut end of the cable.

Whatever......

But THERE IS more than one cut end.
Maybe you'll have to get a cable and cut it to see for yourself.

Re: Making a short XLR cable

Just to clear this up
I meant get one twenty foot mic cable , cut it to create a one foot and a
nineteen foot mic cable by reterminateing BOTH unterminated(cut) ends
