Hi:

What types of audio artifacts are specifically-associated with the
variable-density optical tracks of B&W films? What are these artifacts
caused by?

Thanks,

Radium

Well, I imagine the sensitivity of the film to exposure and the reverse
sensitivity of a photocell to light create a pretty non-linear transfer
characteristic so plenty of distortion would result.

Does the grainyness of the film affect VD more than VA?

I have no idea and don't really care. It's such a lo-fi method of sound
recording that it merits no further discussion.

Film's response to light is logarithmic. One reason why variable area
optical sound had so much attraction. Unfortunately, it had problems of its
own.
