I'm interested in mugging up on loudspeaker driver design theory,
especially with regard to the motor. Does anyone have any decent
suggestions for sources of info ?

Chech the AES library for articles by Kellog, Geddes, and Clark.

AES Compendium on Loudspeakers has everything you'll need, up to the last
few years. In the last few years there has been a lot of work done on
finite element models of drivers; a quick peek through the JAES should
turn up papers from a bunch of sources including Wolfgang Klippel.

There used to be a trade rag called "intelligent motion". They had a
paper on the development of a IIRC 5HP loud speaker.
