I have a DAC960 to which I performed the Gary Galo/Walt Jung Pooge 5
mods some years ago (early 90s?). While functioning it was a superb
unit, the Pooge mods effecting an unambiguous improvement. I loved
that thing.
I believe the malfunction resides on the digital side since the analog
sections are working. It is uses a TDA 1541A crown DAC. I will have to
check the unit and schematic and report other critical silicon in the
digital path (and brush-up on what little digital theory knowledge I
once had).
Pooge mods do effect digital architecture.
The question is whether it is worth effort and time? I suspect an
impulse from a close lightening strike took out a sensitive element(s)
out. Let's assume that's the case.
The DAC960 came out in the late 80s (89?). "Old technology"; but I see
some are still using the 1541. In any case, do you think it's worth a
shot, even if considerable effort is required?
OTOH, if significant $$ is required, a new DAC may be in order. I've
been tracking Monarchy's efforts for a while. (I tried the SE-160 and
250 hybrid power amps [excellent sonics fettered by insufficient bass
weight and impact] resulting in many Mr Poon chats in which he begged
me to try his DACs)
Is there anyone here that may be able and willing to help with
diagnosis? Help availability is critical in making the surgical
intervention decision.
Wink
[The only other DAC I've tried is Benchmark's Dac 1. The king of
clarity, but hyper-analytical. Or Maybe hyper-accurate, lacking
Euphonic colorations.]
