On another note, that last site has an interesting 1933 article on
building your own radio, right down to hand made coil, tuning
condenser, 'wire wound' (filament) resistor, pencil mark on wood grid
leak, and paper clip tube socket.
In their cost workup they consider most everything (like wood, tin
foil, wax paper, cork, tacks, thread spool, metal bits) free except
for the tube and wire. And, as always, batteries not included.
