difference between 15W-40 and 10W-40?

Reply from: Magnulus

What's the real difference between 5W-40 and 15W-40 in terms of
performance. If you never go below 40 degrees, does it matter? Will
15W-40 hold up better than 5W-40?

Currently I have a couple of bikes- 2 scooters and 1 motorcycle.
Mostly they say to use 10W-40 (and of course the "dealership" brand is
recommended). For a while I just used Mobil 1 10W-40, but it's
expensive and I've read that motorcycle specific oils are a waste of
money, especially as I change the oil every 500-1000 miles. So I
switched to using a synthetic diesel oil; Rotella, that is still
relatively inexpensive. For my current main ride, a Yamaha Vino 125,
I just changed the oil out a few weeks ago when I hit the 600 mile
mark- I've had it about 8 months or so but I never put on more than
about 4-6 miles a day. The manual says "use 10W-30 below, use 10W-40
above" sort of thing, but when using the 10W-30, I noticed that the
engine ran with a little more vibration and the valve noise was a bit
higher, but startup was much faster and easier. So I switched to a
conventional 15W-40 diesel oil- at 2.20 per quart it's a good price,
and it'll be in the 90's this summer anyways. The engine is still
breaking in and I've heard it's not good to go synthetic for a couple
thousand miles, otherwise I'd probably just use the Shell Rotella
10W-40 on all my bikes.

Other advice I have heard is to use 20W-50, especially on older
scooters. This is a common motorcycle oil grade, especially for
cruisers, right? But apparrently it's also the standard grade for
Vespa/Piaggio scooters. The manual doesn't specificly mention this
grade, and I doubt I need it. But it's interesting that the Japanese
bikes go with 10W-40 or even 10W-30. Why? Any real downsides to
using a thicker oil?

bike or scooter.

Use whatever viscosity and grade of oil the owner's manual recommends,
and change it per the time/mileage maintenance schedule in the owner's
manual, and not before. Doing anything else is a waste of time and
mental energy that could be better devoted to self-improvement.

I use any of the 15W-40 conventional diesel oils in all my bikes, when
I feel like giving them a treat (how's that for anthropomorphizing an
inanimate object?) I fill them with Rotella 5W-40 synthetic.

Can you anthropomorphize anything else?

huh???
You mean like animals? Say, something like, ohh, Mickey Mouse, Dumbo
the Elephant, Bambi, Barney, or any of a gazillion other talking
animals?

Yes because you are starting off with a thicker base. So when the additives
(that cause the viscosity in the base to reach sae 40) fail your fallback will
be closer to SAE 15 rather than to SAE 5

Does this apply to synthetic oils as well?

I don't change my oil too often. But generally the owners manuals
for the scooters say about every 1,000 miles or so. I think the
motorcycle it's every 2,000 miles.

This site could keep you busy for days. They have a forum just for
guys who like oil threads!

Here is the link where I got my info from (it's been a while and some of the
citation links within it have gone bad)..

I gather that it applies to synthetics also but longer time periods are
involved.

About 10W, I reckon.

Then that's what you should use.

Fuck 'em both.

Use Rotella-T synthetic.
