Jack Stand/Chain Maintenance

I had resolved to never have a bike with a chain again but how I have one!
So much for resolutions.

Since chain maint. is a royal PITA without a center stand, I am now looking
for a rear wheel jack stand. JC Whitney has one for $85 (ouch!).

Anybody know where to get one cheaper?
Any suggestions for attacking the problem some other way?

I use an "Abba" stand. Perfect for side stand only bikes as they make a bike
think it's got a centre stand and that makes chain lubing easy. Mind you, so
does a Snottoiler.

Attack another way. All you need to do is secure one end and lift
the middle. Look about and sww what you have. Examples:

Interesting reading.

I have a nice flat spot on the front end of the swing arm.

Since I only need to raise the rear tire off the ground an inch or so, it
appears that putting a jack there will result in a (relatively) stable
triangle with the side stand and front wheel. If I do need to block the
front, I'm sure I can come up with something even simpler than the example.

Thanks a bunch!

Make one from a piece of 4X6 (or wider , depending on how high your bike
sits) and a piece of 3/4" pipe . Bore a hole big enough to insert a flange
thru the short dimension , screw the flange in place , insert the pipe thru
the hole into the flange .
Google "rikko lift" for more dimensions and instructions .

I was able to pick up the rear of my '88 Sportster
and put a cinderblock under a rear hardpoint opposite
the jiffy stand (three points of support, the front tire,
the jiffy stand, and the rear frame engine mount)...
this was enough for routine maintenance. I think
I used a 1x4" on top of the block, this helped
as a ramp to pull the frame up on the block as well
as prevented scratches. You will find something
like this if you are resourceful.

Be aware that Harley jiffy stands are different from
normal kick stands, stick out much further, and are
designed to hold more weight than other bikes'.
