Oh fuck, Cat has just gotten into "American Idol", a positively dreadful
show. When she turns it on, I either go out to my garage or go to bed and
read.

That, and "Dancing With the Stars" is, in my opinion, BAD television. I
really prefer "Gunsmoke", "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Sanford and Son".

It was better in prior years, when Paula Abdul would come out
totally shit-faced and fall out giggling the whole time.

This year is, no doubt, the most disgusting distillation of
'pandering to their 11 - 13 year old girl' demographic they've ever
sunk to. About the only interesting singer they've ever had, one who
actually had a style and an interpretation, was Chris Daughtry. The
rest have been no-talent wannabe's.

Really, their first season 'star' - William Hung - about says
it all. The guy that you dread getting the microphone at the karoake
bar, a veritable 'Attack of the Killer Tomatoes' of the vocal world,
got rich and famous.

A.I. beats 'Deal or no deal' - a show whose featured
attraction is people opening briefcases, one at a time, to see what
number is inside them.

Yuck, I can't stand that show, as well.

... and "Gomer Pile" and "Petticoat Junction" and "Green Acres" and ....

"Lawrence Welk" still makes the reruns on PBS, too.

Yechh!

I believe I may have seen the last of "Imus." I don't have cable and
thus never watch MSNBC except when visiting relatives. I can flip
through five dozen cable channels and not find any more to watch on a
weekday morning than while flipping through a dozen over-the-air
channels. The local news apes the network news programs. They loop
15 seconds of disaster footage behind 45 seconds of, "Damn this war,"
and "Oh, the humanity!" Every day and every day and every day they
then take a minute to describe what went on on American Idol last week
and what will go on next week. It's like advertising the network's
soap opera during the news without burning up a commercial break to do
it. Then they use a couple more minutes to show the national
weatherman mingling with tourists on a side street in New York. What?
Finally they tell you that they're going to cover something in the
next segment. Pretty soon you learn that they never do. After the
first twenty minutes the next 140 are all commercial breaks, boo
hooing, and tossing salads. It's pretty thin gruel. Imus had no
competition.

Nowadays Hugh Downs does infomercials. Remember when he hosted
sketches by Jim Hensen's Muppets on the "Today Show?"

Hmmph! Chico and the man was better. Thankfully I
forgot almost every bit of those shows.

History does not record anywhere at any time a
religion that has any rational basis. Religion is
a crutch for people not strong enough to stand up
to the unknown without help. But, like dandruff,
most people do have a religion and spend time and
money on it and seem to derive considerable
pleasure from fiddling with it.
