The BMW USA website says for the R1200GS-Adventure:

Saddle Bag Mounts $365.00

But you appear to be right-- no bags are standard or available as an option.

I wonder why. Hmmm. Keep looking.

======================================================================
Equip your Adventure with the best; the genuine BMW Motorrad
R 1200 GS Adventure Luggage System.

Stainless steel pannier and topcase carrier components mount on the
the standard stainless steel luggage rack and frame rails. Panniers
and topcase offer approximately 114 liters weather proof storage:
*Panniers; RH 44 liters, LH 38 liters. The topcase is just under
32 liters.

======================================================================
For The R 1200 GS

BMW Vario Panniers (saddlebags) are available individually and feature an
ingenious new capacity-expanding mechanism. The pannier mounting system
blends with the motorcycles lines when the bags are not in use.

Vario Inner Bags for the new luggage system expand as needed. They are
ruggedly constructed with water resistant liners built in. Handsome in
black and silver and sporting the BMW Motorrad logo with the R 1200
GS logotype. Styled to complement the colors of the R 1200 GS while
echoing the design of the panniers with aluminized panels. Moldings at
the corners add durability. Bag volume may be adjusted via a zipper to
match the volume settings of the panniers/top-case. A large compartment
in the lid is accessible via an all around zipper. A smaller zipped
pouch is included for essentials. The Inner Bag sports an inner liner
with taped seams and water-resistant zippers; a high level of over-all
weather resistance is thus assured.

Yeah the Adventure is a much nicer bike, as well.

The dealer got in a 2006 R1200GS with less than 3000 miles on it. I was
hoping I could get a deal. Some fucking deal, $2000.00 off the $17000.00,
2007 new GS price. Plus, the last idiot owner put a Brembo slip on, on it
(which is for street) and didn't reprogram the chip. It backfired like a son
of a bitch.

It's back to looking for a pre-link brake, 2001 R1150 GS.

Brembo slip on? Anyway, avoid the pre 07 GS's with the 'death brakes'.
Those servos fail and then you're in for the ride of your short life.

That one was a bad moment for BMW. The Bavarian prosecutor's office
found a memo from the head of QA who pointed out serious problems with
the brakes.

If the brake servo fails, you still have brakes, but you have to squeeze
the shit out of the brake lever to get any action out of them.

And the CanBus is a pain. I like to be able to replace lights with LEDs
and add more of them to make the bike more conspicuous. CanBus makes
that difficult.

I reckon you'll be happier with the 1150 too. The new 1200's are gaining a
TERIBLE reputaion on this side of the pond. Bad electrics, leaking shockers,
breaking swing arms and poor paint depth/quality to name just a few of the
problems being bandied about.

I've got about 500 on mine now and it's a hoot! It'll be more fun
when the rains finally clear the crud off the streets better and the
dirt firms up a tad. I haven't ridden real dirt in many a moon and
it's unnerving to let the bike have it's head thru the loose stuff.

I think the PO didn't reprogram the chip on this one either after
adding the full Remus exhaust. It pops a bit on decel.
