Buell Ulysiees

Any thughts on this bike?

I was looking at a 2006, with under 1000 miles. I can get it, with all the
bags and other goodies, like braided cables, for about 9.5K.

Over on a.m.s there are a few Buell fans. You might want to ping
Steve or Mike overthere.

I'm doing a trackday put on by Buell in early May. They are supposed
to have a fleet of Buells to run around the track. I hope I test ride
a Uly.

I like that general format. There's also the Vstrom.

The Buell has a fan for rear cylinder cooling and
somehow I find that bothersome. Stuff along the lines
of "if it needs the fan, maybe it ought to be water
cooled ?", "what happens if the fan craps out ?" and
"what kind of a design is it if there's a big heat
difference between cylinders ?"

And, if there's a heat problem, why didn't they mount an oil cooler on it,
like BMW does?

One cylinder has a heat problem, one cylinder apparantly
doesn't. Probably more of a problem on fire roads than at
highway speeds.

One trick I've seen in the past on competition HDs is to
use two front cylinders, putting the rear exhaust valve
at the front of the cylinder where it gets better cooling.
Also requires two separate carbs.

Nothing really wrong with a fan I suppose. Just bothers
my sense of esthetics. You could also mount some heat
sensors. There's a kind that mounts under the spark
plug that would give you a pretty good idea how your
engine's doing.

IMHO, they should build one, or a series of bikes, with the V-Rod
motor.

I believe that was Buell's intention, but the engine turned out to be too
big and too heavy. I heard recently though that they're still thinking
seriously about using the motor.

Something else I heard too was that Buell was the one who was instrumental
in getting Porche involved with the design of the V-Rod motor BEFORE it was
a V-Rod motor, but that could've been bollocks as I've heard nothing to
substantiate it.

It would have to be a larger bike but I am sure it can be done.
Just need a longer wheelbase à la FJ1300 etc.

Saw a one-off sportsbike (claim is it WILL be in production shortly) in MCN
yesterday with the V-Rod engine for power. Radiators mounted on the side in
the VFR style with a wheelbase shorter than a Fireblade and weighing in at
197kg. Still with only 120 bhp, but the story also says that'll be upped to
180 within the next few weeks.

Seems like a V-Rod motor can be fitted into something substantialy smaller
and lighter that the FJ series if there's enough will.

Good.
You would think a designer would be able to come up with something. I
haven't looked at them enough to tell.
I'd prefer something more sport touring or adventure touring than
sport myself though.

Well Bob, if someone can make a REAL sportsbike (and it certainly looks like
it) and someone has already made a cruiser using the same motor, I can't see
why your choices couldn't be made either. The V-Rod motor has a lot going
for it and it's only at the beginning of its development.

But, to be fair, water cooled bikes also have a fan, so adding a fan
to aid cooling of the rear cyhinder of an air cooled twin shouldn't
make it unreliable; if the fan on a water cooled bike fails, you've
got problems, too.

An oil cooler would certainly make sense on this bike, though; can't
figure out why Buell didn't put one on it.

Perhaps they figured circulating the oil through the swingarm was good
enough.
