Well that's a nuisance

It was a breezy day in the Santa Cruz Mountains today.

Luckily, my tenant was at work.

Some fat bastard sat in the hammock and pulled the tree over?

Will your insurance cover an 'Act of God?'

I thought of that, but the tree fell away from the hammock. If anyone
had been in it at the time, he'd have been launched pretty
impressively, judging from the tension in the lines when I went to
take it down.

If they can prove God did it, they can sue him.

For some reason I don't seem to be able to find my record of payment
for the last premium. Maybe my agent sneaked in while I was over there
(Not to worry. I'm paid up).

Actually, the damage is much less than it looks. The roof is history,
of course, and a bit of wall will need to be rebuilt, but the tree
(fortunately) got caught in a fork in another tree on the far side of
the cottage. The wiring, gas and plumbing are untouched. I think the
TV cable will have to be reinstalled. The far wall is undamaged. The
tenant and I (very carefully) removed his undamaged computer from
directly under the tree on that side. The doors open and close
smoothly, there aren't even any broken windows -- the glass is intact
even in the one hanging out in space in the photo. An insurance
investigator came by shortly after I left. They wanted to make sure it
didn't look as if somebody had pushed the tree over deliberately or
something...

Damn. And I'll bet you didn't need any more firewood, either.

Just guessing, but you might be looking at a lot more damage trying to
get it off the house.

I'll know tomorrow. They got it stabilized today, and they claim they
can hold it in place while cutting other bits away and then hoist the
bit embedded in the place straight up, which should take place
tomorrow morning. It won't be cheap, but I'm insured...

It happens all the time, 200 foot trees don't like having their neighbors
removed. Down in Sonora a couple of years ago a 100 foot tree dropped
straight down into a hidden mine shaft after a good rain.

That same storm was creative down here in southern California, too. Snowed
for an hour at my place, and we're only at 2,200'.

meanwhile, the Sierras are only at about 28 percent of normal
snowpack. Good thing the reservoirs are full.

Yeah. Down here we've only had around 4" of rainfall since last fall.
(Normal is around 14".)

Gonna be a hellacious fire season.

I can't say that I'm looking forward to it. I'm just glad the redwoods
don't burn. I may want to get rid of the other couple of fir trees
around the area.

Ouch!

Send the photo into Ask This Old House. Hey, Norm. My cottage in the
woods suffered some damage in a recent windstorm. I wonder if you and
the guys at the shop could help me fix the gutters.

It's easy to say a war is so important your neighbor should go fight it for you.

Good idea! I'd love to see their response to that request. :-)

What's the problem? It looks like my neighbor's house.
