CS is an endangered species

CS is an endangered species

CS = Customer Service

My bike hauler (Nissan Titan) is basically 4 years old and the stock
battery is past it's prime and is no longer reliable. We like the
truck and plan on keeping it for a long time. So, I decided to by an
Optima battery and after researching the forums, I found that I needed
a the Red Top model 34R. (800 CCA w/ reverse terminals) Optima's
website showed that Pep Boys, Autozone, 4 Wheel Parts Warehouse and
Bayland Battery carries the brand. I called Autozone first and was
told right away that they do not have that battery in stock, but will
order one if I come down and pay in advance. OK, but I figure I would
try the other Optima dealers. Next, I called Bayland Battery. All I
got was an answering machine. I left a message and still have not had
my call returned. I called Pep Boys next and spoke with the manager
and he told me they had one. Great! So I hop in the truck and head
down to the store with a smile on my face. I walk in and go strait to
the batteries. They had plenty on Model 34, but ZERO 34Rs. Relax
Mike, it's probably sitting behind the counter. So I patiently wait
to speak with the Mark the Manager. Mark remembered my call, but led
me to the same bunch of batteries I had just looked through. I
explained, that I was very specific on the phone and that of all the
people in the store, I expect the manager to get it right. I was
pissed and before I left, he was too. Screw him. That was my gas I
wasted because of him. I dove home and tried not to be a jerk to my
wife. Well, I calmed down sufficiantely and called the last place I
was willing to talk with.

Clerk : 4 Wheel Parts Warehouse....
Me: Hi, I need an Optima Red Top battery. I need model 34R.
Clerk: Hold on while I check...........45sec later......Sir, we have
one.
Me: Are you sure it's a model 34R? as in Reverse Terminal?
Clerk: Yes sir, and if you get down here before we close today,
we will cover the tax.
Me: I'll be there in 30 minutes

So I get to the shop and it's pretty small. The only batteries they
carry is the Optima brand and they had 6 model 34s and not one of the
34R models.

Me: Hi, I called about 30 minutes ago about an Optima model 34R
battery.
Clerk: They are right there.

Me: They may be there, but the battery I called and asked about
SPECIFICALLY, is not there.
Clerk: well it is supposed to be (as he starts typing away at his
computer)
Me: So, seeing that you had me waste a trip here, what kind of
deal will you make me if I order it though you guys?
Clerk: Well, that will be somewhere around $214 total.
Me: OK, I'm leaving before I scream nasty things at you that you
totally deserve.

So I stopped by the Autozone and ordered my battery and will pick it
up Tuesday or Wednesday. I drank heavily until we headed for dinner
(Tracy driving) where I dined on Venison and washed it down with a
fine Pinot Noir. That's where I was when Tami stopped by to find me
gone.

So, how much did Autozone charge you? ;)

I try and buy my batteries from Walmart. They start at about $19 and
go up from there but not much. I bought a big one for my motorhome and
it still works great after several years. My .02 cents. OF

I always bought my batteries, and my oil, at wally world, until I
stopped going there at all.

About the only choice I have is who gets my money, and I don't care if
it has no effect, I choose not to give it to wal-mart.

Much less than the police would have charged me if I stayed at either
store for more than 60 seconds longer!

THAT is my experience with just about EVERY transaction I have, be it
batteries, home appliances, bike parts, MD's you name it. It's a
wonder there are not a lot more people going postal and wiping out
assholes. I once had a a pimple face at Sears tell me 'Diehart
doesn't make a battery to fit Volvos' !

There's no meaning supporting local economy when local economy does
not support you.

Sounds like Ohio is a couple decades behind if we are still talking
automotive batteries. That's a nasty item to throw into a landfill or
incinerator. Dry cells aren't much nicer if you think about it, just
smaller. Lately, I save all my dry cells and take those to the hazmat thing
once a year. It's a pretty heavy bucket, usually.

This brings me to a thing I thought about a few months back. You take a new
1.5 volt dry cell and it gives maybe 1.614 volts. and when it's dead (enough
that it won't run a digital camera) it still has most of 15 volts going in
the garbage. I wonder if some guy could get rich with a gizmo that sucks out
that last voltage and accumulates it somewhere for future use. I don't know
shit about electronics, but... isn't a diode sorta like a one-way check
valve? dang...

better get started on my taxes...

Dean my county was one of the 1st in the nation to build a state of the art
sorting facility... all garbage in the county is sorted & recycled.. it was
mandated that any garbage generated in my county had to go to the
facility... <sigh yes it was more expensive than hauling it an extra 100
mile to a land fill, but hey what's the use of government mandates if you
can't tell folks what to do> anyhow waste could be pre sorted by citizens
placing their trash into different receptacles or have the center sort it
for you.. haz waste had to go separate, but it could still go with the
hauler until now.. i expect there to be some lawsuits and anti trust issues
hammered out in the upcoming months due to other issues about the city
garbage truck operating at below cost (driving out competition, by tax payer
subsidies biz) anyhow... normally this intrusion into my liberty doesn't bug
me too much... but it is April 15th and I'm just a TAD GROUCHY
john
1st tax reform law I would do:
would be to move elections to the day after you file your taxes...
2nd would be to eliminate withholdings and make folks write quarterly
checks...

Re: CS is an endangered species

I suspected that I must have misunderstood your first post.
Shady dealings in the garbage business? Who'da thunk it?

McCain made a good tax speech today. Strike while the iron is hot and all
that stuff.

#2 would be my first one. I'd make it weekly though.
People start seeing what they're really paying on a regular
basis and they might wake right up.

Prolly not.

Re: customer service. FDA smallbiz center in Cincinnasti is
excellent. North Ridge Yamaha in Geneva, OH is excellent.
I can't think of a third one.

Go fast. Take chances.

Re: CS is an endangered species

This spring I needed a new pair of deep-cycle batteries for the RV. I found
a pair at Checker that was a few months past their cut-off date for shelf
life. When I called on the phone they said they would discount them. When
I arrived, I asked the manager what the dicount would be. I got them for
50% off! 2 for 1. Great customer service.

BTW, I've since learned the hard way that all deep cycle batteries are not
maintenance free. I really should have known better. My old batteries were
essentially dry, after only three years of use. Check your fluid 2-3 times
per year.

More good CS: Garmin.

My GPS has been shutting down on the bike. Looking at the battery contacts,
the plating is worn thru on the one that jumpers the batteries together.
The unit is 4 years old. Long out of warranty.

Called Garmin. New clip in stock. In the mail tomorrow. No charge.
