Tubeless tires

Just ran across this:

Tubeless operation with conventional tires? Seems cool.

Looked at that a bit ago, not sure I'd see much benefit.

Have ripped out a valvestem once, though. My punctures tend to be huge
gouges, though.

The benefit is supposed to be that you can run high pressures (up to
about 100 psi) in the small tube which protects the rim against
impacts (somewhat) and prevents pinch flats. It also seals between the
inside of the beads immulating a tubeless air chamber. You can run
really low pressures in this chamber. so you can have low pressure
traction with high pressure protection... I would think it would be
really trick when using trials tires on dirt bikes. It provides some
run flat protection when you get a hole in the outter chamber only.
Also it is supposed to make tire changing an absolute breeze. You
should be able to run slime/tire sealant type products effectively in
the tubeless chamber as well to seal small punctures.

It's been pretty well discussed over on KTMTalk and has recieved
pretty good reviews from those that have tried it.
Apparantly it is not impossible to bust one of these though, in which
case you've just had a $100 flat...

I will probably end up them them front/rear when the 21" and 18"
become available (only 19" available right now).

Re: Tubeless tires

Looking at the pics, sorry but that tire is a tire and TUBE all in one, not
like a trials tire. All we do in trials rims/tires is have a nice tight rim
and a big rubber (sealing) band where that thin rubber spoke ribbon goes.

Technically, it's neither... and both. The outter chamber is
tubless... as there is no tube touching the inside of the tire in the
tread area or sidewalls. The small high pressure tube takes the place
of the "big rubber (sealing) band" that you use.

Note: the correct spelling of this product's name is Tubeliss... not
Tubeless.

I guess we should call it a hybrid...

They also come in 21" & 18" sizes. (From their catalog online.)

I just read ver on KTMTalk that the 18" tubes will be delayed another
90 days.
Apparantly they trashed the molds (by accident or on purpose?) and are
stargin over. I'm having a hard time understanding why it takes so
long to scale a tested 19" tube down to an 18" or up to a 21"? :)

Just a few months ago I was dead last at a race. Couldn't understand
why, as I pushing as hard as I could. Till it finally hit me that I
had a flat tire. This isn't the first time a tire goes flat on me.
This day I had to scramble to borrow a damn tube from someone and
install it prior to moto 2. Managed to just in time.

So if a tubeless tire will mean worry free racing and no more silly
flats due to tube failure, than count me in.

btw never EVER buy heavy duty tubes. People are under the impression
that paying more a thicker layer of rubber to be a good thing. It
ain't. I learnt this the hard way too.

What happened?

They seem to keep me rollin'.

The problem with heavy duty tubes is that they're prone to suffering
steam valve failure. More so, the rubber around it just tears. I
bought them thinking that the more money you throw on something that
claims to be heavy duty to be a good thing, especially on a front tire
with all the abuse they take on a hard packed mx track, with some nice
sized bolders along the way. Just last year I had just put a heavy
duty tube on the front tire (new tire and tube combo). It didn't last
a week. As I took it apart while at the mx track I was told by the
more experienced racers why heavy duty are a bad idea and how they
never use it. And they just had to point to the ripped steam valve to
have me convinced. Never had that happen with a "cheapo" normal tube.
They went on to say that this is a normal thing with the thicker tube
and that they had seen it time and again. To this day I don't
understand how a thicker rubber can tear more frequently than a
thinner one but I'm not about to bet on physics if taking such a
chance could render a moto with no points.

Lesson learned. It also re-emphasizes the point that not everything
that costs more to be better. I too learned this with the whole motor
oil thing.

I've had fewer failures with HD tubes. Once I learned to stop
tightening the nut on the valve stem to the rim I stopped tearing
tubes at the stem.

If I were racing MX, I think I'd stick with regular tubes as the HD
ones can be very heavy. I always ran Moose HD tubes, but just bought a
pair of Bridgestone HD tubes yesterday. I'm a bit concerned about how
much they weigh.
