Big jets = fast?

Big jets = fast?

What is it with people jetting bikes stupid rich? If they think bigger
= faster, why do they stop at stupid rich? Why not go for ludicrous
rich?

My XR250R is all stock, other than a small overbore (266cc), foam
filter and snorkel removed from the airbox. Stock jetting is a 40
pilot and 125 main. the PO had a 45 pilot and 138 main. Exhaust ports
and header showed that it was way rich. In 40 degree weather it needed
no choke for a cold start.

Of course, the only 42 pilot I had was full of varnish. I fiddled with
it for 1/2 hour today to get it clean and installed it. Turned out I'd
gotten it clear, but not gotten all of the varnish out. The remaining
bits got sucked into the carb, requiring another removal/clean. Yay.
When I put everything away, I found a clean 42 in my toolbox. Double
Yay.

Because "everybody knows" the evil EPA makes manufacturers jet
excessively lean. And changing things wantonly "makes everything better."

I agree, left to their own, most jet excessively rich. Not just rich,
but excessively.

My XR650L was barely-runs stupid-lean stock, and even that only needed
a moderate re-jet with opening up the airbox. Like 52/155 to 55/158

I think a lot of people totally ignore the needle during the jetting
process. They go over-rich to make part throttle run right, not
knowing they just need to move the little clip (or in my case, shim
the needle).

On a ride last Saturday, my 650L was getting almost exactly 50mpg. This was
on 200 miles, more than half dirt. Despite running great & giving super
mileage, the exhaust is black, and every time I've had the head off there is
massive carbon build-up. I'm thinking that my needle jet seat might be
worn, but can't get a new one (backordered for a year). The only way I can
combat the carbon is to do the obligatory high-speed highway run
periodically.

Jeff,

I think I have most of a low mileage stock XRL carb sitting around (if
I didn't already give it away). Want it?

I'm always happy to help friends clear out their garages. Let me know if
you find it. I rolled over 36k miles on Saturday. I think the large intake
pulses really rattle the needle around, causing the needle & seat to wear.

Performance on this carb is great. No hesitation or flat spot issues. The
only problem is the sooty exhaust. Perhaps I need to reinstall the octopus?
:-)

Please, for my peace of mind since you've been alone with my son on long-ish
trail rides, provide some credible evidence that you're talking about some
weird dual sport bike thing, and not that freaky thing you posted pictures
of Wuds hooked up to.
You guys have too much winter or something.

"Octopus" = XRL smog pump. The first thing to toss.

You are a Dirty Old Man.

I asked a hot girl out the other day. She turned me down. When I asked
why, she said it was because I was a pedophile. "Whoa", said I. "That's an
awfully big word for a 10 year old".

Yours is a california-spec XR650L?

Most of us just had to deal with the pump and the oil separator, no
charcoal canister. That must make it look *extra* ugly.

I almost looked last night. If you don't hear from me about it by next
week, shoot me an email to remind me. Lots going on this week.

Hey, my brother is road tripping to your neighborhood next week. Maybe
he can drop it off.

I'll be out in Utah next week. Absolutely no hurry. If he happens to be in
the area, he can drop it buy, but postage would probably be a lot cheaper
than gas. Too bad we didn't think of this before you Paypal'd me for the
gift :-/

No hurry. The XRL will be getting a tear down in may for suspension
service. That would be a good time to look over the carb.

He'll be sorta busy anyway, so shipping is better. I did see the carb
on the shelf last night but didn't have time to actually box it up.
Shoot me an email with your mailing address and I'll get it headed
your way soon.

In addition to Craigs offer (if he can't find it, etc), I bet we can
line you up with a cheap stock XRL carb from someone who has put on a
pumper carb- thumpertalk, 4strokes, lotsa folks doing that swap. Don't
know why they need an FCR pumper on a trials bike, but hey.
