Yammy TT-R90 Backfire

Hey y'all,

Just picked up a '01 Yamaha TT-R90 for my 11 year old. It's running ok
though it's idling a little low. I increased the idle a bit and that helped.
The other problem is excessive backfiring during decel and stopping.
Suggestions to fix are appreciated. I havn't had a chance to do a full
go-over on the bike yet but plan to clean the air cleaner, change the plug
etc...

Thanks for the help!

Do the required maintenance, then see how it runs. If it is still
backfiring, pull the plug and see if it running rich or lean. If
everything looks good as far as choke operation, jetting, needle valve
setting and fuel delivery, then I would adjust the valves and check
for excessive carbon build up. Kids tend to ride these slow, so
running the shit out of it won't hurt either.

Thanks, I did some of the basics (plug looked fine) and it's running better
but still some backfire. I shot some cleaner into the carb too. Next step
would be a carb job I guess. Appreciate the feedback.

Check to make sure you don't have an exhaust leak at the point where
the header hits the cylinder.

The pilot circuit is too lean. If the carb/pilot jet is clean, you
need to adjust the pilot screw. Adjust for highest idle / best
throttle response in the 0-1/8 range.

funny, I had this very problem and fixed it just a few days ago. I too
just bought a used bike and took apart the carbs for cleaning, did all
the right stuff and it would still backfire when letting off the gas.
Bike run fine and everything seemed ok, but the backfire was still
there.

As it turns out, it was a rather simple issue: one of the exhaust
pipes that connects to the engine (bike has two carbs, it's an old
sport bike) wasn't fully sealed and exhaust air was escaping, causing
the annoying backfire. I wasn't able to find a proper piece to fit due
to this being an aftermarket pipe. So I picked up some cheap muffler
tape and managed to seal the areas where air was escaping from. I'd
check that first as your symptoms seem similar to mine. Hopefully all
you need to do is to tighten those two bolts that hold the pipe in
place. To test it, run the bike, place your hand in front of it and
feel for any air escaping, especially when giving it throttle. If
there's no air coming out of it then it could be a dirty carb or a
mixture issue.
good luck

Better yet, just get some high temp silicone sealant. I like the
copper colored stuff from Permatex.

There is such a thing? I may have to, as I don't know how well the
muffler tape will hold out. Basically air was escaping in between the
2.5" long pipe sleeve that sat around the main header pipe (so both
would be pressed against the engine). I had a tough time trying to get
the tape to seal that very thin space in between the pipes and my low
tech test (blowing on it with my lips - ouch, this can be interpreted
poorly) showed that it wasn't sealed fully but more than enough to get
rid of the backfiring. Guess the next few weeks will show how well it
will hold out.

Trouble with silicone is, it's hell to remove if needed.

Here's what I've got in the tool box:
http :// www .permatex, com /products/Automotive/automotive gasketing/gasket makers/auto Permatex Ultra Copper Maximum Temperature RTV Silicone Gasket Maker.htm

Scrapes off with a razor blade if needed.

All excellent advice. I'll check the exhaust and rebuild the carb. Thanks
everyone.
