Another riding area bites the dust

Another riding area bites the dust

Well, if you haven't ridden at Clear Creek Management Area, well then
your going to have to wait. It's closed. Ed Tobin from the Salinas
Ramblers posted it on the South Bay Riders forum. Here is his post:

"I just got off the phone with Rick Cooper and based on the EPA report
which is due to be released tomorrow, the BLM decided to place an
emergency closure on the Clear Creek Management Area effective
immediately. According to Rick, this closure will be in place until
the BLM completes the EIS process which could take from 18 to 24
months. The EIS will determine what level of use, if any, will be
allowed." Ed Tobin

This is the area that the Salinas Ramblers and the Time Keepers
motorcycle clubs put on their events. It really, REALLY sucks for the
Ramblers because they own land that borders Clear Creek.

This just means that Hollister Hills will become a more of a zoo than
it already is. (Four letter words!)

On top of that, they just spent a fortune in green sticker funds
putting up lot's of new fences, bathrooms, trail markings, trailer
near entrance for collecting fees.

Thoroughly pissed off

Fuck.

I contributed a few years ago when Tami brought this up.

This whole ridiculous system needs to change and NOT in the way
that Obama/Hillary want.

I'd be very intersted to see if Obama is on the record at all about public
lands.

And McCain for that matter

Hillary doesn't matter to me at all.

Not that I'm aware of.

Nor him.

Me neither.

See page 8 of: "For More Information about Barack's Plan...
Read the Environment Plan" on the official Obama campaign
website:

< * w w w .barackobama . com /issues/pdf/EnvironmentFactSheet.pdf>

"Obama supports the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which
keeps over 58 million acres of national forests pristine. As
president, he will repair the damage done to our national
parks by inadequate funding and emphasize the protection and
restoration of our National Forests."

RACR, "protection and restoration of our National Forests",
... that should give some insight.

At least he's not a Senate co-sponsor of S1170 (nearly 10
million acres of BLM Wilderness in Utah). Clinton is, but
might debate the meaning of "is" depending on whether she's
drinking shots with gun-toting rednecks or merlot with
enlightened smuggies.

Thanks,
Is that Zippy?

Page 8 has lots more stuff too. Nothing too happy sounding.
I especially worry about this "and will create additional incentives for
private landowners to protect and restore wetlands, grasslands, forests, and
other wildlife habitat." Since an incentive would probably be some kind of
tax relief, it's pretty easy to see that the other side of the coin would be
a disincentive (i.e. tax) on those who don't "protect and restore" their own
private land.
Depending on how this idea would be enforced, it could be a real intrusion
into landowners' privacy. I suppose some voluntary and optional paperwork
demonstrating a landowner's efforts could keep enforcement on the correct
side of privacy. I wonder if this idea is aimed at citizens like the Grand
Poobah of Jayrassic Park, or if he's talking about lumber companies and the
like. Probably both.

Anything useful from McCain?

Nope.

His campaign website "issues" statement is more vague than
Obama's:

< * w w w .johnmccain . com /Informing/Issues/>

There's an environmental group that claims to be Republicans
(Dave Foreman -- the founder of Earth First! -- sometimes
claims to be a Republican too.) that's briefed McCain's
environmental record.

< * w w w .repamerica.org/McCain_enviro_record.html>

He's no Richard Pombo, but probably a lot better for
multiple-use management of public land than either Obama or
Clinton.

It'll be fun to see how environmental groups paint McCain
*after* the Democratic nominee has been named.

There's also the Federal judge thing. And Obama or Clinton
will likely make judge shopping a whole lot easier for
environmental groups.

I haven't looked back through Senate bills to see what else
McCain has and hasn't sponsored or co-sponsored.

Thanks again.

Here's the stuff from there:
Here are some points worth noting:

#1. In 1984, as a member of the House of Representatives, McCain worked with
Congressman Morris Udall (D-AZ), to pass the Arizona Wilderness Act of 1984
(PL 98-406), which protected 1 million acres of forests.

#2. McCain was instrumental in congressional negotiations that led to
passage of the Arizona Desert Wilderness Act of 1990 (PL 101-628), which
protects 2.4 million acres of range, desert, and wildlife habitat.
The lands protected in this bill include Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife
Refuge, the largest wilderness reserve within a national wildlife refuge in
the lower 48 states.

#3. He sponsored and won passage of the National Parks Overflights Act of
1987 (PL 100-91), which protects natural quiet in Grand Canyon and other
national parks by limiting overflights.

#4. He voted in 2005 to support an amendment to the Interior appropriations
bill (HR 2361) cutting off funds for building new logging roads in the
Tongass National Forest, a rare coastal temperate rainforest.

#5. In 2007, McCain introduced legislation (S. 86) to designate Fossil
Creek, a tributary of the Verde River in Arizona, as a Wild & Scenic River.

#6. In 2007, McCain introduced the Arizona National Scenic Trail Act (S.
1304), to add an 807-mile non-motorized trail to the National Trails System.

#8. McCain supports establishment of National Park Centennial Fund to
eliminate backlog of park operations and maintenance projects.

Mike,
Expect the closure to be permanent. They know that the Democrats that
are on board are not going to object. Look for Holister Hills to close
next. The governator has a 20B shortfall to deal with. OF

I seem to recall an article a few years back about guided tours
across the Outback. Are these a thing of the past?
