MX Race report

Havn't done a race report in a while and this one was actually typed for
the guys that I usually ride with so some of the names won't be familiar to
you all but I thought I would post it anywho~

After a 1 1/2 year lay off I decided to do my first MX race. This was the
first local MX race I had done in a few years, 1 1/2 years ago was out of
state, and at 42 my first in the
senior class. The good thing was it was an afternoon program so I didn't
have to get up so damn early. Rhawlene and I headed for the VDR track at
Berthoud at 830. We got there paid $24 to get us in the gate and found Jary
Penny who was racing the morning program and parked by him. Headed over to
sign up and paid my $39 for AMA and then my $42 for SRAC (signed up for 2
classes but only racing 1 today) then my $30 for for the race fee. That
first time sign up is a
bitch on the check book.

We had a bit so watched some of the early moto's running. One of the
novice classes ran and we saw a pretty painful accident. Guy went down over
a little step down with his bike laying in the middle of the track when
another guy came over and tagged his bike. The 2nd guy went over the bars
flying like a rag doll for 10+ yards. Several other guys hit the guys bike,
first lap and everyone was bunched up, before they could get them stopped.
Red flagged the race. The guy that went flying through the air got carted
off the track on a back board. Scary to see. Watched Jary's 2nd moto in the
50+ class, no AB or C everyone of that age races and he got 2nd to a guy
he said had raced SRAC stuff forever in the A class. Jary actually stayed
pretty close and had a good ride

Anyway finally got to go out for our 3 lap practice and got the track in
my head, not much different since I had ridden there a month ago. Got a
little rest and headed to stagging for the first moto. I was ready to throw
up at stagging, no not cause of nerves, cause some tart was wearing stripper
perfume, she was standing close by talking to her man. I was able to roll
forward a bit and stay out of the deadly plume. They started calling off the
numbers for gate picks and when almost everyone else was lined up they still
had not called my number and the guy started talking to someone else. I
rolled up and asked about lining up and he said everyone else could go ahead
and line up, great, one of the last gate picks. First corner was a right
hander and I ened up lining up way to the left.

When the gate dropped I held it on and had only one guy to the inside of
me and he took me deep into the corner and the soft stuff, guess he wasn't
gonna let me try and square it off. I came out of the first corner around
5th, I think we had around 30 on our gate. I was able to make some quick
passes to 3rd. Took about 1/4 of lap and I was in 2nd. By the end of lap 1
I was on 1st places rear wheel. The guy wasn't doing all the jumps and knew
I was there and started riding a wide bike. If I tried inside he went inside
and the same outside. After about 1.5 laps of this I tried to go way inside
on a left hander and lost the front wheel going down. The guy in 3rd was
able to get by me before I could get the bike picked up and going again. I
caught up to his rear wheel by the end of the moto but didn't have enough
time to get by so I finished in 3rd.

Because of my finish I had much better gate pick this time. I rolled in
just to the left of the starting box. A guy lined up to my left, guess who?
the guy with the girl with the stripper perfume and she decided to stand
next to him. I guess the saving grace was that I wasn't going to get any
bug bites with that scent in the air scaring them away.

When the gate finally dropped on this one I went by one of my old ISDE
rider buddies advice about riding a 125 into the corners. Hold it on till
you see god, then hold a bit longer. I did and was able to muscle it around
the first corner with some big time braking and come out with the hole shot.
The guy that got 1st in moto 1 was right there with me for the first 2
corners but I wasn't giving an inch and started gapping him. From there I
was able to ride my own race. The first 2 laps I went pretty hard and
noticed I had gapped the guy in 2nd and couldn't see anyone else. I went
into cruise mode so I wouldn't dump it. Rhawlene said that on the last lap
when I went by she counted to 20, by thousands, and 2nd place had not come
by and she gave up on it so I had over a 20 second lead.

I ended up going 3-1 for 2nd over all Senior C. A little frustrated with
the
first moto, if I could have gotten by the guy I could have gapped him there
too. I need to work on my passing. Good day over all so I went home pretty
happy.

Great report, Rex! $135 in fees, huh? Wow. So it'll be just $54 at
the next race? Well, plus travel and bike fuel. And I think it's
expensive to travel the 100 or so miles to Red River and pay $10 per
person admission ;->

Congrats on the early-season success!

It was very steep and I had some real second thoughts about spending that
much, in the end I was glad I did and now the next time it will just be the
gate fee and race fee.

I can relate. I was all hopped up to do a HS this season, but after I
looked into it, it won't happen. They've priced themselves right out
of business. Between NETRA, AMA, backgrounds and numbers, electronic
scoring gizzies, and fuel, it's easily over $300 to do a single race.

All that stuff is expensive, that's for sure. If you live in a place
like I do, where legal riding is hard to come by and membership fees
are high, it can start to make sense. You do have to do more than one
event per season to spread out the annual costs. The enduro I just did
cost me $40 and maybe $20 in fuel (total, truck and bike). In terms of
"bang for the buck", I can't beat that anywhere else. Of course, none
of the other races are that close to home.

Backgrounds and numbers don't need to cost anything... think duct tape
and/or electrical tape. Enduros don't require the transponders and
give you more miles for your $. You're still stuck with AMA and NETRA
fees though.

Cost is yet another reason a plated bike is a must for me. I can ride
locally w/no travel costs, no entrance fees, no memberships, etc. Not
the greatest riding, but far better than sitting around wishing I was
riding.

Yea - if I lived in down in CT, I'd be racing the NETRA season for
sure - almost all of the events are down there, so travel wouldn't be
much of an issue. Having to drive a between 2-4 hours each way from
NH (at 13MPG) just adds insult to injury.
