brakes squealing

brakes squealing

My rear brake squeals real bad. I changed pads a while back and they
squealed before and after the change. Any easy ways to quiet this down.
It's a 91 DR350S.

Also, do they sell the shifter rubbers that don't blacken up the tips of
my left shoe?

Cheers

Dave

On automotive brakes it's sometimes a matter of applying thick,
sticky lubricant (usually supplied with the brake pads) between the
piston and the back of the pad. If you didn't apply such lube when
switching pads, that'd be my first suggestion to try.

And depending on what the rotor looks like, it may need resurfacing
or replacement.

Buy black boots. ;->

Do you use the alphabet or numerals? I found the letter "W" pretty much
gets this reaction every time.

A Harley will fix this.

Good luck,

As Fred said, there's a thick sticky goo you put on the back of the
pads. Its more like silicone caulk than a lube, hit the auto-parts
store and tell them you want a small container or tube of disk-brake
quiet.

There is a spray, but it is not as effective as the goo.

You could put a small piece of rubber hose over the shifter tip, or a
small piece of large heat-shrink tubing.

Ditto to what CTD and Dave have said, but don't forget to also grease
the shaft on the caliper mounting bolts as well. I had the exact same
bike (year and model) and had a little squeak issue until I took both
of these steps.

On the shift lever, I'd suggest buying a new breakaway lever without
the rubber cover. That little stock (tapered) shift lever sucks
compared to one of the moose units and others and it's a cheap
upgrade. Keep the old one for a spare.

Deglaze the rotors. Clean the dust out with brake cleaner.

Yep. It's called aluminum.

hehehe the rearbrake of my YZ125 squeels awfully...just because yours truly
changed the shoe-retracting spring for a slightly stronger one.
I kinda forgot that stronger means bigger...thus the spring touches the
centerpart of the hub.
Guess you wouldn't ever do such a silly thing ;))))
