co-worker ride report
A few guys I know from the shop set out to go riding this past weekend.
Destination ...Upper Tellico plains in Tenneessee Near Murphy N.C.
Long story short.. they were not very prepared.
On Saturday two of them departed the camping area for a ride wearing shorts
and t-shirts.
They got lost...no water ...no food...no communication device and they had
left their gps back at the camp.
After searching feverishly they set up a campfire for the night.
They successfully got a fire blazing but the tempratures dropped to very
chilly overnight. (approx 50 degrees or more)
Then it rained and totally doused the fire out.
So the two stood up all night shivering listening to the noises in the
night.
The next morning their buddies from the camping area called rescue 911 and
after a several hour search the two were located by the park ranger and
rescuers.
Brings a whole new meaning to watching Survivorman.

Summary- they survived despite their best efforts!
Glad to hear they made it out OK, hopefully they don't quit, but
approach it again with a more serious mindset.
I wasn't riding very long before I added a rain poncho and an
emergency foil blanket to my kit.

Summary- they survived despite their best efforts!

I get laughed at for carrying those, as well as waterproof matches &
water purification tablets. I figure having them should almost
guarantee that I never need them.

Good judgement comes from bad experience.
A cheap & easy survival item to carry is a trash bag. Punch holes for your
arms & head. It will dramatically help keep your core temperature up. On
days when chance of rain is very low, I will carry the trash bags. All
other days, I carry my goretex jacket.
Glad they survived. I hope they are footing at least part of the bill for
S&R.

We got billed (by mistake) for $2500 for the rescue attempt -- Ventura
County should have sent it to LA County, but they sent it to us. We'd
probably have to pay for it ourselves if it happened now.
A gave D the cigarette lighter. On the hike back every once in a while
D would set a dead yucca on fire to warm up. A crazy Jeeper drove me up
the Alamo Mountain dirt road in the dark at what felt like breakneck
speed in hope of finding them, one of the scariest rides of my life.
You just don't expect snow around here...

I used mine to line my helmet so my son could drain his oil into it
while he dug into the transmission and unjammed something that stopped
working. I wish I could remember how we got the oil back into the engine...

Other than zip ties and tape, the only thing I've ever needed that I
actually brought was a new front brake lever.
Someone else certainly appreciated the spare master link I carry- they
lost one on the trail. They were amazed I had a spare (actually I
always carry two, one with the holes reamed ever so slightly so it'll
go on without the press I also carry).

I always rode with those fix flat sprays. the day I left home without
it I got a flat.
I don't leave home without a rope, a knife and plenty of water.

Next time you send them out, tie one end of a 100' nylon rope to
their bike and the other to a tree in the pit area. When they get
lost, tell them to just follow the rope back.

I am afraid they would untie the rope.
I am going to get a list of things together and make sure they have them.
They are lucky to get off so easy, they have a new respect for the woods.

Jeesh, massively rocky terrain at UTP in shorts & tee's?
Just to make'em feel better about their survivor skills :-) tell them
that my 2 boys (10 & 12) had to build and sleep in their own shelter
out of only what was available in the forest last December in 38
degree temps and a drizzling rain as part of the Wilderness Survival
Merit Badge for Boy Scouts. No sleeping bag, no fires allowed. They
were allowed the clothes they had on,, a pocketknife and their wits/
training. All the boys that went that weekend voted to make it an
annual activity.
BTW, this trip was in the Chattahoochee NF about 30 miles south of
where your buddies went native. I live about 25 miles from the south
entrance to Tellico

I am also going to advise them to read Hatchet and watch Survivorman
episodes.
