Oil plug exttracted! Thanks J. Cook and D. Garner and others!

Welp, the JB Weld idea worked and I used the putty type so a huge
Shout Out (Chad Reed speak) to you both as well as everyone else for
their input!

Boy, I feel relieved! Now I had better get back to the 6-pack I was
told was required for the job... ;-)

Thanks again guys! If ya get to Sacramento how about letting me buy
you a beer?

Scott

How can this be avoided?

I mean the breaking plug.

Do not overtighten. Do not overheat the motor. Use the best tool
for removal. Change oil routinely. If the magnetic plug in question is
aluminum, perhaps switch to steel. Those would be my guesses,
anyway... never broke a drain plug myself, but I did break a plastic
"fill plug" on an old 80cc bike once when I overtightened it and tried
to use pliers to break it loose. (Hey, I was like 13 and new to
mechanics. I thought *everything* needed to be tight! ;-)

I don't know whether you'd wanna use "Never-Seize" or something
like that... someone else might know. But with proper care and a good
plug I doubt you'd ever have a problem.

I've watched Jim Cook work on bikes. He keeps an industrial size
can of anti-sieze. Made me think.

I'm with you on the "don't overtighten" thing. I also use crush
washers on drain plugs and swap them out every now and then.

On any given dirtbike... if it doesn't require locktite... it probably
should be anti-seized. That should be like a golden rule or something.

Did you two make it home okay?
I completely finished my trail section, but have four tick bites that
sent me to the doctor yesterday. (I had many more, but just these four
are really acting up.)

I enjoyed being around you, and hope John's elbow gets better quickly.

Do you have lyme disease there (yet)? Very good to catch that early.
It's the sickest I ever was, ever.
Well, untill that necrotizing fasciitis thing, anyway.

If you like conspiracy (or whatever) theories, consider the following
snipped from Wikipedia:
"The full syndrome now known as Lyme disease was not recognized until a
cluster of cases originally thought to be juvenile rheumatoid arthritis was
identified in three towns in southeastern Connecticut in 1975, including the
towns Lyme and Old Lyme, which gave the disease its popular name"

And then look off the coast of Lyme and Old Lyme to see (also snipped from
wikipedia):

"Plum Island (41.183, -72.190) is an island in the Town of Southold in
Suffolk County, New York in the USA. The island is in Gardiner's Bay, east
of Orient Point, off the coast of Long Island.
The Plum Island Animal Disease Center is located on Plum Island. The center
conducts research on animal pathogens in order to protect farmers, ranchers,
and the national food supply. Due to the nature of the research, access to
the island and the research facility is restricted."

I'm just saying...

Get well soon Jim.

Yea...
Somewhere around Nashville we decided to press on to Knoxville and a
riding area on Jellico Mountain. Rolled in there around 3 am. Arrived
at the campground. Only way in is a ricketty old bridge that was
marked 3 tons max. Luckily we found a place to turn around and went
back a couple of miles to a truck stop and laid down for much needed
sleep. The next day we bought some passes (hunting licenses actually)
and set off to explore the park from another trail head. We found the
campground by trail and talked to the people there. They said the 3
ton sign was just a ploy to get a new bridge built and that dump
trucks, etc used it all the time. We put in about 30 miles. It was a
fun place, but the parts we rode were not difficult at all.

So our total dirt mileage for the trip was about 100 miles. I
completely wore out a brand new set of rear brakes. I've ben going
through them like madd lately? I hope it is due to marginal wheel
bearings and rotor???

It was a blast riding at TR and a blast hanging with you and the
locals. I'm glad the trail is comming together for the race. From all
the parts we got to ride it will be a great course. I wish we could
come back and do it. Any other RMDers that can get there should do it.

Interesting and simple concept. If it's still in the cranium this
weekend, I'll consider it permanent.

(Posting through Google, com , since my news server seems to have taken
a dump this morning.)

You are very welcome!

To reply to one of the questions in this thread: I don't neverseize
the threads of my drain plug. I just make sure that the threads of
the plug are clean, and using a crush washer, I tighten properly. (I
do not overtighten the drain plug. I use a t-handle wrench to diminish
leverage.)

Good Riding and Wrenching to You!

Jim
