My Week-Long Husky Love-Fest

My Week-Long Husky Love-Fest

Eric and I spent a very wet week in Nevada over Memorial Day. We
mostly did dual-sporty stuff on the "big bikes" (his LC4 640e and my
Husky 610) but we also took the 450 and 426 out for a ride on some
very bitchin' horse trails. Lotsa wild horses out there...

Anyway, here's the full story (including yet another expensive tow/
recovery effort and a little bit of mechanical drama) along with about
100 or so photos. We took almost 300 photos, it was hard to decide
which ones to post...

Freakin' awesome report and photos! Last June on our trip around
the west we had originally planned to drive the ET highway (Hwy 375)
from just north of Alamo over to Tonopah. Due to time constraints we
ended up on 95 out of Vegas and headed southwest at Beatty instead.
Our reward was 117-degree temps in Death Valley and a beatiful drive
through Lone Pine, Bishop and Lee Vining, California.

But Nevada has plenty of kewl stuff and excellent off-road and/or
dual sport terrain. You just have to go at the right time of the year.
July is probably too hot for all but the really high elevations, and
February is probably too cold (and snowy) for all but the lowest
elevations. You guys went at almost the perfect time... if that front
hadn't come through during your trip it would've been absolutely mint.
So I think you timed it about right, actually, just got a little
unlucky with one of Mother Nature's last storms of the season.

There was something... I dunno, epic... about the heart-shaped
headlight on the Husky though. Very kewl. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. It's fun doing a report with photos.

Well, you probably didn't miss a whole lot on the ET highway. It
mostly runs through the flat desert stuff at the southern end of the
mountain ranges. If you want scenic beauty, you gotta hit 50. You'll
hit about 7 mountain passes on your way through NV. That's what made
us want to ride out there.

Actually, the sand and dirt was in absolutely primo condition, all the
way up to the snow. The only problem was at our camp and the howling
blowing snow up on Ophir Pass. Yeah, it was a drag slabbing it in the
rain, but it made for perfect dirt. I feel pretty forunate to have
been out in the desert in those conditions.

I thought that heart was so sweet! It reminded me of the little red
hearts that were floating above my head when I rode the Husky. True
love at its finest <G>

Yeah, I think I have been across 50 before (and 80 several times),
but it was a long time ago. I can see on the map though those
north-south mountain ranges you wrote about on 50. Particularly the 3
that parallel 376. I'd LOVE to ride that area. How far is it from
ya'll's house?

It was a 6-hour drive from our house to where we camped.

NICE!

What an amazing report.

So, did you abandon the PP overnight in the dry lake on your trip to
Eureka?

Well, it is a lot more interesting with photos, that's for sure.
That's why posted it there instead of here first. I kept the wordage
to a minimum, much to the shock and surprise of everyone here, I'm
sure <G>

We weren't parked *on* the dry lake...not that you'd know it by the
time we got back to camp. We were quite a ways above it. There were
hot springs out there that I was kind of mum on, as we had them to
ourselves for a whole week over the Memorial Day holiday and I want it
to stay that way...can you imagine that happening anywhere here in CA?
Yeah, we left the PP and took the bikes out to Eureka. We had planned
on the dirt route but got thwarted the day before. I kept thinking
about those cool horsetrails and thought that would be a better use of
our time. We then slabbed it all the way to Eureka...about 115 miles.
I gotta say, the stock Husky seat is about 1000% more comfortable than
the stock
KTM seat. Good...one less thing I need to buy.

I hate you. In the nicest possible way, of course.

I rode with a guy on a 2008 TE250 last weekend. He lost a blinker.
Clearly a common problem. Friggen unreliable exotic bikes...

Ride report? Photos? Snide comments?

Yeah, no shit. That, combined with the stupid flat tire, and I wonder
why *anyone* would spend their hard-earned money on a Husky...sheesh.

Just this:

http :// i246.photobucket,com /albums/gg106/forcedtojoin/May%2025%20dual%20sport%20ride/dougspics02.jpg

Compare to your photos, and you can see why I hadn't bothered to post
a RR.

Actually, it was a pretty decent little ride and we were never more
than 5 miles from my house. Finally got to ride with a localish guy
who I've "known" online for a couple of years now. We had a good time
and plan to ride more in the near future. A decent local riding
partner would really help encourage me to get out more.

I took the TE for a quick spin. It has the Husky power-up kit, and
really makes nice power. Certainly a bike I could live with.

See the blinker hanging in the pic above. We tempted fate and rode
with no tire repair stuff. Crazy, I know, but I figured I'd wing it
since we were so close to home.

So...you read the report (obviously) and looked at the photos, and the
only thing worth commenting on is my spelling? That's bizarre...

Remember, this is usenet :)

I caught the winky, smiley crap that was just under the surface from
the perfesser.

Anyway, back to the suspension--what was done? I would think Eric
could set it up for you.

Yeah, I know Joe pretty well, and I kinda sorta know how he operates.
That's why I said "bizarre" <G>

Eric couldn't do anything about the stock 6.4 shock spring being
appropriate for a 240lb man. Nor could he do anything about the front
forks being set up for the same big brute of a rider. I don't know
what Husky was thinking. Anyway, Les re-sprung and revalved it and he
lowered it, too. This is something I have to go through with almost
every bike I buy, so it is an expected and necessary expense. We
couldn't get anything from RaceTech to lower it ourselves, like we did
the KTM (which was set up really closely for my needs when I got it)
and the set-up was so far off we just wanted it done right in a short
amount of time. Les has lots of experience with the Husky suspension
(the 610 stuff in particular, and he rides a 510) and he's a pretty
sharp guy. What I was asking for was a little bizarre (relatively tiny
person on a big SM bike, but wants it to be plush in the dirt, but
also wants to rip on the pavement, too...) and I think Les nailed it.
It was perfect in the dirt for what I was doing, and easy to stiffen
up for the street with a few turns of the clickers. I'm still working
on perfect settings for both, but I'm not far off.

Cool info, thanks. I still think you're selling Eric short :)
