Thats bad, unless the oil was black when you put it in.

No matter how good of condition your engine is there will be blowby
carrying soot. If your oil's detergent properties are weak or nil this
soot will not be trapped by the oil or oil filter but deposited on the
cooler surfaces inside your engine. This was a characteristic of the
"Amsoil Lifetime Oil Change". Oil always looked pretty but engines were
full of junk. The theory said a no-detergent oil using an exceptionally
good oil filter could run the oil forever, only changing the filter. But
even an exceptionally good filter was not good enough to catch the soot
before it plated the engine.

A good motor oil whether synthetic or refined will turn dark within the
first 500 miles. So long as the soot particles stay small they are
harmless suspended in the oil. When suspended in the oil soot is removed
when the oil is drained. An oil filter will not remove this soot unless
particles cake together and make a bigger particles.

It is definitely darker than when I put it in, but nowhere near black.
The truck has less than 20K miles while the car has over 70K miles.
I'll live with it as I haven't nuked a car or truck engine since I was
16 and threw a rod on my POS '79 Trans Am. I am far from easy on my
vehicles, so I must be doing something right. I would probably still
be driving my 1994 Chevy S-10 if the insurance company didn't total it
for about 3 times it's worth.

If you really want to see BLACK - you should see the color of the oil
I drain out of my tractor. Even after only 50 hours, it's so black
that it looks like you can almost reach into it - like space. It's
weird.

I thought you were just supposed to dump old oil in the driveway to
keep the dust down?

Youngstown is doing something sorta neat right now. All those
foreclosed homes are getting bought by the local gov't and made
into open areas. If only I could figure out how to hook them up
for rides.

I miss Idora Park. Spent a bunch of nights there in my youth.

3rd tool down.

This and some old oil, add a bit of kerosene and cosmoline from F&L
products, and your 1975 Chevy pickumup will last at least 7 years
in the salt.

New cars/trucks don't seem to need it though I noticed my '05
Ford Ranger is showing rust on the frame. Time to break out
the "undercoat gun" next fall. A really filthy job. Guaranteed to
require 4 shampooings to get it all out of your hair.

For a few minutes. Then the aluminum nozzle will be worn
through at some funny angle and spewing sand at your face.
Sandblasters, even the cheapo venturi ones, have a ceramic
nozzle.

For me, the price difference is so little that I let the nice guy at
the gas station change my oil. He dusts off the air cleaner with
compressed air - for free - and always checks coolant level and
windshield water too. Changing car oil at home is a mess, the oil
filter is hard to remove and I hate crawling under a car. At the
station, he has a nice elevator. Also, the guy takes only 20 minutes
and I am there watching all the procedings. For the bike, I change at
home, because my bike is not plated, registered, insured, etc. When I
have to go to the station to change car's oil, I take all the used
bike oil and dump in theirs used oil tank. Since I use the same oil
for car/bike, folks at gas station gladly accept it. I suspect it must
worth a few nickels to them. Btw, I collect the bike oil in a plastic
container I found on the kitchen section of a large department store
and afterwards I put the used oil in the same bottles the new oil
came...

I'd love to have a recycling facility come pick my old stuff, but
instead, I have to walk to the end of the street just to dump the
garbage. Love the town I live but hate the (lack of) infrastructure.
