That's an option. Tools/Preferences/Tabs -- I think. I use the Tab Mix
Plus extension (add-on) which gives a number of useful options.

If you have a lot of IE bookmarks you're wasting humongous amounts of
space -- each one is a file, with the minimum size being whatever you
(or Gate$) decided you wanted when you set up the machine. Yeah, HD
space is cheap, but that's still no reason to throw it away with both hands.
