Help! Drain plug head broke off! How do I get the threaded part out?!?!?!

Even if it's broken off flush, you can probably still get it out by
tapping it around with a hammer and sharp chisel. With the head broken
off, there's no 'load' on it, so it should come out very easily. You
could probably just cut a small groove in it with a dremel and use a
regular screwdriver to remove it.

Good luck,
Craig

This method worked for me when I broke a valve cover bolt on my XR250.

Others have suggested good things. I'm curious about the drain plug.
Sounds defective--who made it? Where'd you get it? I have a Moose
drain plug in one of my bikes, hope it isn't a Moose brand...

I always use a torque wrench on the oil drain bolts. It requires a
surprisingly small amount of torque to get it right.

I imagine it had something to do with dissimilar metals. I had
one freeze up in an older bike. Tapping it for a good while with
a chisel and hammer got it loose eventually.

I always use a crush washer and trust my instincts.

Hey there!

It was made by Tusk and I bought it from Rockymountainatvmc. I was
purchasing a set of Acerbis Bark Busters (70 or so bucks) and got free
shipping with a purchase over 99 fun-tickets so I loaded up on a few
things I really wasn't looking for (long tire iron, etc...) and that's
when I bought it... Kinda wish I hadn't now! :-) I change the oil
all the time with no problems for years - I prolly shouldn't have
worried about metalic parts in the oil in the first place...

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys!!!!

If the bolt is steel you could always have someone mig-weld a nut to
it.

If it was really stuck for whatever reason, maybe you could drill the
offending plug and tap it for a smaller drain plug.

Leave the ofending drain bolt in place and use a suction to drain tha
old oli out through the oil filler spout. Refill with new oil. Don't
ride too far from the house at first until you can be sure that the
old bolt will stay in place. OF

I've used these with pretty good success.

Hey all!

I started a new thread 'cause the plug remnants are not what
expected... Either hollow or defective and thus the Easy Out didn't
work.... Pics on ABPM, too.

Thanks all!

Get a flat blade screwdriver wedged in there and back the mofo
out.

If that's red loctite in the picture, you're hosed. And would
explain why the head snapped off.

If that *is* the case, pull the cover off, drill it out and
heli-coil it.

Scott,
If it is red loctite (high strength), you may need to apply some heat
to the area to break it's bond. (hand held propane torch comes to
mind) Just don't apply too much heat and distort/melt the cases or
ruin the center case gasket. Just "local" heat, on the plug and
immediately around the edge of plug hole.

Thanks guys! Luckily there is no Loctite! At least there's one piece
of good news! I'll try more when I get home from work tonight!
Thanks again!
