Too much length sticking out and not enough clearance out back ... it'll
drag on the slightest dip and/or incline making it impractical for anything
beyond paved surfaces. I prefer the type that hydraulically lift the bike
up and back closer to the host vehicle. More clearance for access to
primitive backcountry riding & staging areas and they double as a work
platform for tire/suspension work.

Acceleration and braking forces will impart a significant bending moment on
the welded area promoting fatigue cracking on the heat affected welded area.
Annealing will mitigate the problem and give more toughness but is
expensive. I wouldn't want to loose my bike off the back in a critical
failure much less be sued by the survivors of the aftermath of the
multi-vehicle collision behind me as the bike and ramp emulate the Master of
Sparks from ZZTop's "Tres Hombres" album ...

Good engineerin' to ya,
VLJ

I thought "knarly" wasn't used anymore... maybe that was "gnarly" and
"knarly" is still acceptable... or maybe you've misspelled "gnarly"...
or you're trying to revive "gnarly" by calling it "knarly".

What I want is a carrier for my motorcycle to haul a bicycle. Do they
make them or do I make my own?

Sadly, it seems to be hard to find any
of Ricardo's fine products these days.

They sell all kinds of these. Some lower to the ground so you can roll
the bike on easy and raise back up with mechanical or electric/hydraulic
lifting. You may need axillary tail lighting.

It seems like this or a similar rack was reviewed in Rider Magazine in
Feb.2008 under the name Joe Hauler.

It makes a good point about 'blocked license plate'. Pretty
much like having a sign saying 'PLEASE pull me over, Officer !'.

I don't think that is an issue with dirt bikes... see the 3rd pic
down... my plate is visible (although you cannot read it in the
photo). Now imagine the visibility of the plate... if I were towing a
trailer. Note at this time trailer plates are not usually required in
KY for non-comm trailers.

The lights are somewhat obscured (less so at night time), but a light
kit would solve that issue.

Hitchhaulers are useful tools at times. It's good for places with
limited or no parking, can be used on Jeeps, etc to get into tight
places to make a recovery, etc. You can also put 3 bikes in the bed
and 1 on a hauler to haul 4 bikes in a truck. I don't use mine very
often since getting an enclosed trailer. But it's always there if I
need it.
