Along a popular cruise route in the eastern Caribbean is a small
island where two separate but similar red, white and blue flags fly
above a lush mountainous terrain. On one part of the island, the
flag’s colors are “bleu, blanc et rouge” and on the other side it’s
“rood, whit en blauw,” making the French and Dutch shared island of
Saint-Martin / Sint Maarten the world’s smallest island inhabited by
two countries.

The unique cultures situated on one 37-square mile island offer cruise
passengers the rare opportunity to experience two nationalities during
their day-long visit.

Of the many attractions on the island, shopping is the main draw; so
much so that it’s one of the premier Caribbean shopping destinations.
In Sint Maarten’s capital city of Philipsburg, an abundance of shops
are along Front Street displaying tempting duty-free merchandise.
Jewelry, stylish boutiques and Delft porcelain are just some of the
many wares which can be had by bargaining. Slightly northwest in the
French capital of Margot, where bargaining isn’t the common buying
method , haute couture reigns supreme with such labels as Prada and
Gucci, along with other trendy European designers and upscale French
import merchandise.

Aside from the alluring shopping possibilities, the island possesses
the most diverse and first-rate dining in the Caribbean with over 300
restaurants. At the forefront, the French town of Grand Case is known
as the “Gourmet Capital of the Caribbean” offering an extensive menu
of fresh fish, French and Creole specialties served up by local chefs
and often by many top visiting French chefs. However, the entire
island, whether French or Dutch, serves up specialties from nearly all
of the 93 nationalities who call the island home.

Since this is the Caribbean, you can expect to find all the
quintessential sun and sand activities: snorkeling, scuba diving, kite
boarding, sailing and miles of beaches studded with restaurants and
bars. Most cruise ships dock in Philipsburg and from there the choice
is yours as to how to explore the island. There are a multitude of
excursions, from island sightseeing drives and sailing adventures, to
trail and beach horseback riding.
