OT Mahogany Exterior Floor Protection

Ok, you wood working fanatics.

I'm having a mahogany exterior floor put down on my front porch...
what do I need to do to protect it and keep it looking good?
(besides hiring a professional to do something, which I'm gonna do; but
I want to know if I'm getting the run-around, or someone who knows what
the fuck they're doing)

Mahogany as an exterior flooring? Yikes!I would have never considered
that wood for EXTERIOR use, but what do I know?
I'm not made of money like you and that dildo saleaman. :)

Wikipedia says "it's slow to rot", but.. Hmmmm.
I would ask how INSECT repellent it is also, compared to Cedar or
Redwood.
Seems like a pricey wood that "biker people" will stomp and wipe there
boots on, so upkeep, and the finish you desire to keep to show off that
wonderfully looking wood, might be a thing that needs to be done very
periodically.

Butt, being as it's used for boat building, I'm sure that once it's
coated with a great varnish(or epoxy) that stands up somewhat decently.

Sure would look pretty though, as my ol' Gibson Thunderbird is made
totally of the stuff! Sounds great too!
Somehow, I don't think you care about how yer porch sounds. :)

In my opinion, if you decide to use it, I would have the pieces COATED
on all 6 sides BEFORE installation with a marine grade sealent... then
double up on the "working surface".

How to protect it and keep it looking good?

EASY!
Make sure people don't walk on it! :)

And while I don't recommend Balsa for your project, did you know it IS
classified as a hardwood? It's true!

No boots at my house, they come off first.
In NJ... the cabin is a different story alltogether.

Stick with CEDAR, and stain and polish it to look purty.

No, I said "porch!"
(Why I oughta....)

Funny that!
Around here at the IHOP, all the folks here take off their shoes upon
entering... even me!
BUTT(!) they have to walk in first, so such a fine EXPENSIVE wood should
NOT be used as a walk in, when stained redwood(or tile) could indeed be
used. (IMHO)
A custom even I have adapted to, as I never wore shoes IN my house since
1993!
Now my feet smell like petunias in a bed of roses!

Moving on...

Mahogany? Damn, I love the looks of that tight nit wood, but all my
floors, the deck posts and railings, and even the ceiling in the
addition is all cedar.
BULLET PROOF!... well sorta.

Mahogany should be saved for fine furniture and guitars.

The house my father had built in 1960 is sided with Philipine
Mahogany. It's impervious to pests, but it's impervious to
paint too. We had to paint that house every 3-4 years until
my sister covered it with vinyl.

You made me wonder, so I kept looking, and found this!

or

"3. Philippine Mahogany
Philippine mahogany is a tight-grained hardwood that resists pests and
rot. Treat it with marine oil and it looks like teak. Or, let your
mahogany deck age to a silvery hue. Look for the "FSC" trademark to
assure that rainforests have not been harvested irresponsibly."

Obviously, you CAN find almost anything on the web! :)

Will the decking be protected from rain and/or sun or out and exposed?
Do you want it to weather and turn silvery or are you trying to
preserve it's color? What variety of mahogany is it? Details man,
details!

Nothing like a great WOOD WORKING thread here. :)

And yes, the "What variety of mahogany is it?" is a KILLER QUESTION!

Exposed (roof over the porch), on the north side of the house.

Preserve it's color.

>What variety of mahogany is it?

WOOD! Like from a tree.
