Finally, back at itShirley, a round of drinks.
It was finally a nice sunny, warm Saturday and I had nothing to do but stay
at home and make sure the kids were still alive when their mother got home
from work.
I started with the Ural, which had gone neglected for most of the winter. I
pulled the lap blanket off, which will need a good cleaning itself, and
armed with a toothbrush, a baby food bottle with some degreaser in it and an
old t-shirt, I attacked the engine. There's lots of little tight spots that
are hard to get to, not counting inbetween the fins. I spent a few hours on
the right hand side, taking a break part way through to make sure the kids
didn't starve, and the went after the right. Obviously with the hack in the
way it's much harder to clean the right side than the left. Part of the
exercise is to look for anything that might be loose or damaged, but for the
most part everything looked good. I need to do some scheduled maintenance
tomorrow, re-torque the cylinder head nuts and check the valve clearence,
but I figured I'd wash it first so I don't get a bunch of crap in the rocker
box.
After supper I decided to shift gears and I finally got back to reassembling
the engine for the Daytona. It's got to be well over a year since I did
anything on that. I need to torque the heads and get the rocker boxes
tightened down, but tonight I got the rest of the gearbox inner and outer
cover back together. Seems like it's shifting through all the gears, but
I'll be damned if I can find the shifter, so I just used vice grips. After
that I finished putting the stator on and got the primary cover back on.
That's about all I got down tonight, tomorrow, assuming I have the time,
I'll finish up the items I mentioned on the Ural and then I'll get the oil
pump and timing cover on the Daytona engine.
I'm at the point where the engine can go back in the frame, but the frame
isn't quite ready yet. I'll have a week at home in May, so the game plan is
to get as much done on the Daytona as possible that week, while at the same
time pulling the tub off the Ural and treating the inside and bottom with
some sort of truck bed liner.
