Any thoughts on Andrews vs. S&S gear drive camshaft sets from a quality
standpoint?

If you are going gear drive, make sure you have the crankshaft runout
checked.

*shrug* I've got the S&S ones with Wood cams and they work. I can't
remember if it's an 8 or 9 offhand, but heck, the bike runs nice and
keeps ahead of most I've bumped into in northern NJ (where I'm currently
stuck, having escaped from NY).

I guess that DJ '42 is on me, huh? Looks like that gear drive'll have to
wait. Sheesh, doesn't anybody drink PBR anymore?

I understand they are both excellent. One consideration is the small
differences in the shaft locations on different engines. If you buy a
set and install them yourself, you will end up with an unpredictable
amount of gear lash. I bought mine from my indy shop and had them
install them. The advantage was he could mix and match slightly
different gear sizes to get the lash within specifications. He
installs many more S&S than Andrews so I went with the S&S. I'm very
happy with them so far. I like the power curve and I like the slight
gear whine the motor has now at slow rpms.

Its my understanding that S&S makes the andrews gear drive gears, but not the cams

The '07 and up chain set up is a good deal. The local indy does not put
gears in the newer bikes. If you have a pre-'07 you can stick in the newer
style chains, Only short coming is a limited choice of cams.

I've got an '03 RK with a 103". I've been thinking 'bout the new chain
set-up, but was thinking it may be best to get away from tensioners.
Haven't really decided which yet, though, so thanks for the advice.

Apparently there's some Don Julio 1942 open somewheres, so have a few ounces
if you're so inclined (and if Wakko hasn't drained it yet).

There was a article in American Bagger last year bout the 2003 being the
first year Harley went to a single roller bearing and that the crank can't
take the torque like the previous TC's. The article was called support your
local crank.

If you plan on building any thing stronger than a bolt in cam will produce
you may want to look into this. A friend had his 2003 RK 103 SE built this
winter and the wrench put in the double roller bearing like the previous
years. And he won't change one out to gear drive if it has more than .004
run out.

I have the S&S 570G with their gears and lifters. I had it
all put in with a 95" bigbore. This is an '02 FLHT and after
a few thousand miles I have absolutely no gear whine and the
top end sounds like a sewing machine. I'm happy. Don't have
any experience with Andrews so I can't compare.
