Intro (well, sort of)

Intro (well, sort of)

Ok, round for everyone here. I'm kinda new, or at least new to you, as
I was a somewhat prolific poster, like 5 -7 years ago....

Ok, basically, I'm (a) Phil, and I used to live in various places:

* East Hartford, CT (college, looking for first job).

* Glen Cove, NY (I grew up there, and lived there again after school for
a year or two)

And now I live in - Lincoln park, NJ.

**** begin boring shit ****
This place has nothing to do with the band by the same name. rather,
it's the part of NJ that's on TV every time it rains.

About 4 years ago, I dumped my then job, which sucked royally, to get a
new job. Current job is doing controls and instrumentation for water
and poop plants. The company I work for is small (15 folks), but has
stuff everywhere. if you've shitted in NYC, we had something to do with
it. If you've drunk the water in Toms River or Brick, we had something
to do with that, too. Actually, our stuff's everywhere. For the
technically inclined - we're mostly a GE-Fanuc shop, though we've got a
lot of Allen-Bradley, Modicon, Bristol, and Siemens experience. We also
vend pumps and chemical injection and all that other good stuff.

My current big project is sorting out Toms River's water controls.

This beats the pants off of elevator crap (really, it does). I get to
see new/different stuff all the time. Since I have no sense of smell
really, poop plants don't bother me (though I've yet to get soaked in
poop, which means I'm not an 'official' employee yet..)
**** end boring shit ****

Ok, anyway, the current ride is a '99 FXDWG that I've had since....'99.
The motor's been punched to 95 inches, it's got Hillside heads, a TW9BG,
S&S E with Thunderjet, Jims rollers, S&S lifters, Axtell pistons (which
actually wear out the jugs faster than the pistons wear). It hauls ass
nicely to about 105 - 110, at which point it's a bit out of pep. I did
find out last fall that it *will* pin the speedo, though, just gotta
give it 20 secs or so once you get over 105...

Oh, it'll got 108 uphill, fully loaded ;) Seriously, it eats hills up
for some reason I could never figure out.

The paint is a custom done by Rolling Thunder Çycles (Long Island) then
in house painter dude. Traditional flame job - I had to actually talk
him into it, but it's a really fucking nice one. Seat's a Mustang
flamed one with the flames matching the paint (yay for advanced material
samples!)

I'm thinking of building a barhopper / fast bike, and leaving the WG for
longer distances / more relaxed riding (relative - the thing's fast
enough to get you into trouble real fast). Basic requirements as of now
are:

* Solo seat.
* Stability to at least 125mph.
* 117 inch motor.
* 220 - 240ish rear.
* 6 speed (Baker).
* Forward controls.

Something that makes getting arrested really easy ;)

Things I've noticed about NJ:

* Panhead lives right near one of my customers
* State Troopers can't drive.
* Taxes are obscene.
* Dick Cody acts like a govorner a lot.
* Nobody caught on after McGreevy rebuilt 1/2 the rest stops on the GSP?
* NJ Transit sucks enough that it's employees don't even use it...

Um, ok, that's out of the way, I guess...

Yeah, I remember ya and I'll take a pair of ice cold Coors, thanky.

<schnipp down to all I care about>

So, ya know a thang er two about elevators, eh? I'm lookin' at buyin'
and installin' a used American hydraulic, two story, 23 person, 3,500
lb cap. It came out of a Seattle Boeing building and th' seller
thinks it's a late 80's unit. Sezzed it's all there too. Three phase
220 v electric over hydraulic with a cylinder kinda like an old
service station car lift.

I'm guessin' there ain't a chance in hell of gettin' an elevator
company to install this thing since it's used. And I can't find any
info on "American", did Otis buy 'em out? Any clues about this thing
and installin' it?

Yeah. Mostly controls, though I've been in machine rooms. We worked
the controls side - building controllers and rebuilding them, not
installations, though we dealt with firms that did that (they were our
customers).

With the controls and all? I suspect you're going to have to have it
updated to the newer safety regs. I don't know how people typically
deal with used elevators.

Yeah, that's what it is, basically. The motor's across the line, soft
start, or wye-delta. Pumps to lift the car, the car returns on gravity.
There's a valve assembly in there, which is either Maxton or Dover,
likely. If you need a new controller, you need to know the valve
assembly - they're all different.

> I'm guessin' there ain't a chance in hell of gettin' an elevator
> company to install this thing since it's used.

I'd check around. it depends on what the local laws are, and what the
service is - if it's passenger, they may care more than if it's freight.
or at least they used to.

> And I can't find any info on "American", did Otis buy 'em out?

Might have been a large installation firm. NYC has a metric assload of
Staley stuff, mostly 6/7 floor car door apartment specials. Otis
generally doesn't chase the low end anymore, since it's the high profile
stuff they like. a lot of small firms will use off the shelf stuff
and package it under their brand name (Cemco, Staley, etc). The jack,
valves, pump, controls, door devices are all likely name brand. I bet
you've got GAL operators on the doors...

> Any clues about this thing and installin' it?

Have a pro do it - elevator shaft work is surprisingly dangerous*, and
you gotta navigate the building codes, which means you'll need some
legal dudes too, likely. The last thing you want to do is squish
yourself, or anyone else, and then be stuck in court for a few years,
and elevators are pretty good at squishing folks.

Also, remember you'll need a floor below and likely above in the shaft,
since the jack sits in a pit, and you need to clear a guy on the roof of
the car. And a bit 'o space for the pump/tank/controls.

Don't forget - you're gonna need some upkeep, and an annual inspection
on it, too.

* We had a two story hydro at our hop, and NOBODY but the boss ever rode
the roof of it, period.

I dunno, th' fuckin' installers I've called don't want fuck all to do
with this project. All kinds of you can't do this, that, or any other
mutherfuckin' thing.

Then I called th' county... arrrghhh! Gotta get L&I involved. Plus I
can't insure th' building unless I get this all permitted. And
sellin' it someday without a permitted building could be a deal
breaker, banks don't wanna lend on those. Whata bunch of bullshit.

This elevator came out of a Boeing building. You know damned well it
was regularly maintained. It's a commercial elevator, th' state won't
allow commercial elevators in residential buildings. If I change th'
designation of th' Hog-Den to commercial, that opens a whole nuther
can O' worms.

I'm thinkin' th' only options I have are to either outlaw this thing
in or grease th' right palms to make it happen.

Snarl... fuckin' pissed off

Any size limits on dumwaiters ?

to do with 'em,
Butt I do know they are residential not commercial

It's just all a buncha beerocrapic bullshit.

Th' original idea was to use an electric forklift for this task. I
might be better off stickin' with that anyway since I could use it fer
other shit too.

What pisses me off th' most is th' "you can't do that" crap as opposed
to some problem solving skills like but if we do <insert whatever
here>, it'll work.

Snarl... gonna go grab a coldbeer, want one?

Someone once said to be smarter than problem.

http :// www .ecoalifts, com /products15-category.htm Second unit on the page. Not very fancy, but
it'd get the job done.

Yeah, I've looked at those sissor lifts and it would work fer movin'
peeps from floor one to two n' back. For th' same or less money I
could get an electric forklift that could do that *and* a bunch of
other stuff.

Th' first floor is gonna be a shop with lathes, mills and other really
heavy shit. Being able to also offload and place those would be
extremely helpful.

This elevator is a steal tho.

Kinda hard to get a bike in one. Do you know anyone who'd ride a bike
into an elevator, up to th' 2nd floor then right up to th' bar? I'd
save a bunch of dinero on bar stools.

Snarl... if it leaks, park it onna deck

Install elevator in an empty frame separate from the HogDen.
Build bridge to HogDen. Only thing not permitted is the
elevator. The HogDen is still golden.

Sell raffle tickets on who the first person to ride of the
bridge will be.

probably not quite that simple, but it's a start

I kinda had an idea you'd already considered that. Depends on what you think you want most.
Sounds like you're already leaning towards the fork lift so my crystal ball thinks there'll be
one in your future.
