Fuckin' Rivnuts

So I wander down to the local H-D shop
in Greenville to pick up 4 bolts and 4
rivnuts to mount the cop seat on Rodney.

"We've got the bolts but not the rivnuts"
Figures.

According to the funny parts guy, the
closest rivnuts are in Raleigh, NC.

I JUST FUCKIN' CAME FROM THERE.
Figures.

Local hardware store. Rivnuts are used on all kinds of shit. Real
common in hardware stores.

They were only 50 cents!
That's the cheapest I wouilda ever gotten outta a H-D dealer.

I should have bought the bolts,
I could have matched up the rivnuts.
And they woulda been half the price of H-D.

I've got two more dealers within spitting distance,
and then off to the hardware store.

I think you're conflating conspiracy with incompetence. There's one
Harley dealer in Jax with three stores. All their inventory is
computerized. None of the stores can tell you what's in stock in any of
the other stores without picking up the phone and calling.

Really.

How fucking stupid is that?

Could you set them up with a system that would allow them to see who's
got what in stock without you even having to be fully awake to build the
system? Yeah, me too.

I'm more a believer in incompetence than I am in conspiracy and I
usually hold HD up as my shining example of why.

I'd buy into the incompetence theory, but I don't think it's HD. I think
it's the dealer or specifically, the employees at the dealer.

Several years back I was heading out west and stopped at the local stealer
for something. They didn't have it stock, but could get it in a few days. I
told them I was heading out of town, so they got on their 'puter and found
three dealers along my route that had the item in stock. They even
confirmed it and had the dealer in Omaha hold it for me.

Maybe it's me, but I have a hard time believing that Ademec's or whoever
owns the Jacksonville dealers do not have access to the dealer intranet. I
bet they do but don't know it.

You're almost certainly right. It is Adamec's and their notion of
customer service is a mite lacking. I noticed an ad on TV for the
dealership in St. Augustine, saying it was under new ownership. That's
the last of the old-time dealers in this area. Guess I should say was
the last of the old-time dealers. Always liked Hollingsworth's Harley.
There's a chance they may not change too much with the new ownership
now that the bubble has burst, but I'm not holding out a lot of hope.

You're right about the problem being the dealers & their employees, in
the case of Adamec's it's just taken to a new level. In the 40 years I spent
around Jax I got to know quite a bit about 'em. Yes, they have access to the
dealer intranet. Yes, they have computers, & yes, they have an inventory
process. The last person I talked to about that process explained that the
reason it takes so long to get a part is that they order every other Tuesday.
Doesn't matter how critical the part, how long they've been out (they don't
order when they reach a low level or 0, they wait till there's a request for the
part) they order every other Tuesday. If you come in after the order went out
it'll be two weeks before the next order......period!
Now that was a few years ago, but it was the point where I quit ordering
any part from 'em. If none of the local aftermarket shops had what I needed I
would check Adamec. If they didn't have it in stock, I just headed for Daytona.
