Regular Gas in a TC96?

Regular Gas in a TC96?

Have a round of your choice on me. I'd like to know if there are any
folks running regular (i.e., 87 octane) gasoline in their TC96 engine,
and if it is causing any problems? I ran regular unleaded in my '05
TC88 Low Rider with no problems at all.

91/93 octane gas in St. Louis is 25 cents more per gallon than
regular.

If I can hear it, that is. My ears aren't what they used to be <sfsf>.

I ran lower octane for a few miles with my 04 TC88 last year.

- cruised about 450 highway miles on a Saturday over a 6 hour period
- temp at start (9:00am) was about 70F and at the end was about 85F
- kept a nearly constant highway speed of about 70mph
- started with 91 octane
- second tank was a mix of 91 and 87
- third tank was 87
The mileage decreased (about 5%) as the octane level went down - enough so
that the higher mileage nearly paid for the slightly higher price of the 91
octane - last year. This year may be bit different.

Thanks for the java!

Your mileage probably changed because you are comparing winter gas to
summer gas (different formulation).

Octane will have no impact on mileage, unless it was detonating.

kind of sorta, actually running a higher octane fuel than needed can
have loss in fuel economy, not much we are talking a mpg or two

Well, hell. I've been putting 93 octane in it because the salesman
said the bike would run better than if I put 91 in it.

Maybe? If the bike is designed to detect spark knock (not to be confused with
detonation). It could be adjusting the timing to stop it. The mileage could be
less because of the ignition timing being retarded several degrees at different
times. I've got a Cadillac (not a Cadillac motorcycle) that loses almost 3 mpg
when I run regular in it so I guess it could affect a bike the same way.

Just ran a tank of regular in my 95" Ultra for comparison. My lileage
improved considerably.
Probably because it's still cold way up here in the frozen north country.
My plugs were black after a couple of weeks so I changed them out and ran
the regular, hard, and a tank full pasted 270km instead of 200 or so.
I wionder if the Power Commander makes ongoing adjustments based on
temperature and ease of fuel burning?

Here in Iowa regular cost 3% more than ethenol(10%) but in my car I get 10%
more millage with the regular... so math tells me to pay the extra...so I
do.

Have not done the same in the bike.... But I just hit 2100 miles on the 2008
and my millage went up a lot I was only getting about 220 per tank before I
got 250 on the last tank. But I did have a riding partner for the first
time then too and it was only the second time we were together...Also the
mirrors on the inner fairing are not as shakey and I can see clearer behind
me now, before(2100 miles) it was really bad. I am guessing the rubber
mounds on the bike have broken in... or maybe just broke already...

we can't buy any gas here without ethanol in it now :(

Power Commander is not an active device and makes no changes other than
what has been programmed by the last tech.

Rinse and repeat your test over the same ground in same temps and have
your buddy fill the tank so you don't know what grade of fuel is in it.

I thought it would be.
The tech, supposedly a good one, optimized the fuel air ratio on the dyno
in March.

I'm objective enough to know the difference.
I did mostly highway but leaning on it doing 120-150kph (75-95 approx) on
local highways with minor in city riding.
The mileage was better (much) than a week earlier on straight highway at
mostly 110-120 in warmer weather on premium but admittedly with two up.

I plan to repeat the test as often as possible over the coming months.

You got better gas mileage riding one up? Gee whiz.

I get better milage riding two up.... guess I am not so hard on the throttle
when she is back there.... but I do get a squeezing when I rub my footboard
on the road!!!
