Weather and mileage

Seems odd, but now that the temps are coming up my mpg seems to be
increasing, by at least 10% if not more.

Just saying.

Have a round on me.

Would have guess the opposite with denser cold air offering better
combustion.

I haven't put much thought into it. I don't tend to let it idle anymore in
the winter than I am now. I did put a new tire on it not too long ago.

Denser air requires more fuel per unit volume of air. A lower air
temp or a higher atmospheric pressure would make the air more
dense.

Yeah, makes sense. Realized that after posting. Better combustion doesn't
mean less fuel.

Might have something to do with the gasoline formulation from winter gas
to summer gas.

Either that, or driving slower to ENJOY the riding, instead of the:
"Fuck it's cold! Let's get their faster!" :)

I read that the refiners are changing over to summer fuel

Used to be a time when they dumped the winter blend cheap to the consumer
but not any more. The summer blend uses less chemicals in the mix and
again it should be cheaper but not any more.

Could be, cold starts requiring the choke or enricher to have to be on
much longer in cold weather, thicker wheel bearing grease, thicker oil,
thicker trans oil, all the above. It's typical to get more mileage in
the warmer weather than in cold. The fuel is more aromatic in the winter
too which I'm sure has some effect on mileage.

Hey Hoser,

This kind of mileage change is inevitable. I track the mileage of my
bikes & cars for tax purposes, and see similar - and we see a smaller
swing in seasonal temps than you do, I betcha. It just takes more
time to warm up the motor in cold weather, so it has to run richer
longer, using more fuel. Length of your commute & temps = factors.

I used to run the bike with the chokes out and the revs somewhat high to let
it warm up when it was cold out, but I stopped doing that, now I just pull
the chokes out let it warm up for less than a minute before driving off with
the chokes still out. Then once I'm a block from the house I push them in
(kinda awkward to get that right choke in, the left I can get with my boot).
I've been doing this for a couple months now, so the amount of time that
it's running richer is about the same regardless of the weather because I'm
always at about the same spot when I shut the chokes off. I may have to
start watching this for interest sake, but for now I'll likely continue to
get gas sooner than I need it, at least until I fix my jerry can bracket.
