for a newby to DSLR's the d200 may be a bit easier to operate. until they
learn the basics of fstop, shutter speed, depth of field, etc; the scene
modes in the d200 should make shooting a tad easier. the d300 has no scene
modes. it does have a program mode but that is not as intuitive for
specific types of shooting by new converts to dslrs. the d200 really only
gives up 2 mp's and 12 bit raw as opposed to 14 bit raw. since the human
eye can't see the number of colors that 12 bits capture nor can any printer
reproduce them the added feature of 14 bit is not really relevant to 90% of
todays applications. i can get technical and tell you where the benefits of
the extra 2 bit lay but unless your a true photoshop guru it will neve be
utilized.
i am fixing to buy me another d200. with the factory refurbs street price
around 800 bucks it is the most bang for your buck in a dslr. IMHO and
other disclaimers. for the 500 dollar difference between it and the d300
the extra savings can be rolled into glass. after shooting for a week with
the 300 i have noticed in a frame by frame comparison that the 200 shoots a
sharper image than the particualr 300 i had access to. (using the same
glass and subject)
speaking of d70's. last week i was shooting with three nikon dslr's and my
kodak pro14 dcs. it is a 14 megapixel full frame sensor camera. between
the kodak, a d200, a d300 and a d70 most of my frames were shot with the
d70. why? because of the size of the individual sensor sites on the
sensor. the lower megapixel count on the same sphysical size sensor of the
d200-300 means that there is a little less noise in the shadows of the
capture. i am so familiar with my d70 from years of use i know exactly how
it is going to perform in any given circumstance. here are a couple of
frames from the d70 that i shot last week. these are resamples straight
from the low res jpeg capture. not photoshopped raw images...
