OT-Cameras

Finally go this place to put some Guinness on tap so get it while it's
available.

Cameras. Been getting by with my old Nikon 4300 for a long time.
During said long time I've bought my wife a Sony Cybershot DSCT30
(miserable camera)and my daughter a Sony Cybershot DSC-N2 (excellent
camera).

Me? I've been getting by looking at digital SLR's and trying to
decide if I wanted to make the jump. Now the reviews I'm reading and
the pictures I'm looking at taken by the Nikon D300 are making me want
to take the leap.

So I'm thinking what I could stick on my bike for $2,500 or so that
would make me go that route rather than the camera. I got the bike
setup pretty much the way - performance wise - I want it so I'm
leaning hard towards the camera.

Any opinions?

And if Billy da Roach is reading this the patch ain't cheap any more.

Take a look at the Canon line....more specifically the Rebel xTI....
10.1 MP moderately lightweight - I picked one up 6 months or so ago,
and I'm quite happy with it..

And now they've got the new Rebel XSi that's 12MP...

One thing you have to watch with a digital slr is the camera has a
multiplier so a 100mm zoom lense can really be more like a 160mm zoom for
the same distance compared to a regular camera with a lense this is more
important for the wide angle lenses like I have a 18mm lense and the rebels
have a multiplier so it is more like a 40 mm lense.. I take pictures of
houses and use the wide angle so I don't have to get back 100s of feet to
get the whole house in. The more exspensive cameras have a 1 to 1 ratio
with the lense but those camera's are the professional and are in the $3000.
have fun with the salesman or woman.. they look at you real confused when
you ask them about this....

from canon web site the EOS Rebel xsi: Canon EF lenses (including EF-S
lenses)
(35mm-equivalent focal length is approx.1.6x the lens focal length)

Where as the Canon EOS 5D:Originally developed by Canon, this
high-resolution, 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor sets the standard for its
class, featuring a remarkable 12.8 million effective pixels for a maximum
recorded resolution of 4,368 x 2,912 pixels.

until I can afford the 5d I love my pocket canon powershot A95 only thing I
don't like is the fact after you press the button it takes 2 seconds before
the picture is taken so actions shots are almost always missed.... oh well,
got it on ebay, I only paid 120 bucks and the memory cards will work in the
5d when I can pick one of those up for under 2 grand....

Luckily I go to a camera store that employs people who can answer my
questions. 8-)

And I absolutely LOVE mine. It's been a fantastic camera.

As a wildlife photographer I couldn't work with something like that.
Actually, that's why I upgraded first to the original Digital Rebel, and
then to the 5D.

You'd love it.

Me three. I can't stand that delay. Besides, in 2 seconds the tiger is
already at the fence waiting for scritchies. Or trying to smack me.

I say go for the D300, but I'm a Nikonian. I LOVE my D70. It may be
old, but it does everything I need it to do and does it well. We have
the D70, a D100 and a D200. And a bizillion lenses.

Here's a D70 shot of my buddy Zulu.

Tsunami is as big, if not bigger, than Diablo now. But is much, much
nicer.

Well, he'll grow for another year. And he already has some very
"grownup" moments. (When all his female neighbors are in heat, for
example. Yeesh.) And lots of "I'm just a big kitten" moments, which
can be almost as scary!

if you are going to be riding your DSLR around on a motorcycle and treating
it anything like i treat mine then you may want to go with a camera that has
a metal chassis. a plastic camera like the cannon rebels or the nikon
d40/d80's are not durable enough in IMO.

right now you can pick up nikon d200 refurbs for around 800 bucks body only.
90% of the time a factory refurb had nothing wrong when it got sent back
except for a consumer that decided they couldn't afford it or operate it.
the factory runs a full diagnostic and sends them out as refurbs at a
bargain. while the d300 sports a couple of more megapixels and 14 bit raw
capture as opposed to 12 bit raw it is twice the money. i don't think it
has twice the features.

the cannon vs nikon debate is something that will never be stettled. my
opinion is that cannon's are not as durable as nikons due to the fact that i
have never had a cannon last a full year and the only nikon i ever killed
was dropped in the ocean. a salt water bath would probably be hard on a
cannon as well.

the cropped sensors of most consumer DSLR's is a win/lose situation. i
personally don't worry about it. just remember to multiply you lens length
by 1.5 to get a 35mm equivalent. i like to shoot my zoom lenses on a crop
sensor camera and my wide angle lenses on a full frame sensor.

if money is an issue you can still pick up nikon d70's NIB really cheap.
while a lot of folks tell you that the 6.1 mp sensor is not up to current
standards they are wrong. this sensor when compared to a 12 mp point and
shoot still gives you more informtion because its a physically much larger
sensor which makes each sensor site bigger. while not 100% true remember
that in most circumstances the higher the megapixel count the more noise in
the sensor. the cool thing about the d70 is its metal chassis, durability
and low noise. i dropped one off of an 8 foot ladder onto concrete and was
able to pick it up and continue shooting like nothing had happened.

the most important part of your camera purchase is the lens. never skimp on
a lens to buy a better body. put your money in glass and then the body.
fast, metal bodied lenses are what make good pictures. you can't do
everything with one lens and these new 18-200 zooms are crap. my rule is to
never buy a zoom with more than 3x magnification. 17-35, 24-70, 80-200 are
really nice zoom ranges. the 24-70 would be the most used range of these
three in most circumstances. by f2.8 lenses if your wallet can stand it.

My original Canon Digital Rebel rode around loose in my tourpack for
hundreds (if not thousands) of miles and never had a problem. I'd just
sit it on a sweatshirt and go... And I've never had a single problem in
any Canon camera I've ever used in the last 20 years. They aren't
babied, either. So YMMV no matter what brand you buy.

Donna,
actually riding around in the saddle bag of my tour pack may be the
easiest thing my cameras do. this is where the professional metal bodied
cameras get separated from the plastic one. remember i have the same
opinion of nikon plastic as i have of cannon plastic. plastic is plastic
and look and the manufacturers shutter cycle ratings for realistic
durability measurements. check out some off topic spam but still decent
pics. luckily for me good subject matter makes up for poor technique.

Okay, most of that was way too scary for me. LOL

FWIW, I now have a metal body camera, too. The Digital Rebel was the
only one that wasn't. But I do bang things around quite a bit.
Surprisingly, years ago what did a lens in was a 2' drop off a booth
seat onto carpeting in a restaurant. That same lens had previously
survived a 4' drop onto concrete. Go figger.

for a newby to DSLR's the d200 may be a bit easier to operate. until they
learn the basics of fstop, shutter speed, depth of field, etc; the scene
modes in the d200 should make shooting a tad easier. the d300 has no scene
modes. it does have a program mode but that is not as intuitive for
specific types of shooting by new converts to dslrs. the d200 really only
gives up 2 mp's and 12 bit raw as opposed to 14 bit raw. since the human
eye can't see the number of colors that 12 bits capture nor can any printer
reproduce them the added feature of 14 bit is not really relevant to 90% of
todays applications. i can get technical and tell you where the benefits of
the extra 2 bit lay but unless your a true photoshop guru it will neve be
utilized.

i am fixing to buy me another d200. with the factory refurbs street price
around 800 bucks it is the most bang for your buck in a dslr. IMHO and
other disclaimers. for the 500 dollar difference between it and the d300
the extra savings can be rolled into glass. after shooting for a week with
the 300 i have noticed in a frame by frame comparison that the 200 shoots a
sharper image than the particualr 300 i had access to. (using the same
glass and subject)

speaking of d70's. last week i was shooting with three nikon dslr's and my
kodak pro14 dcs. it is a 14 megapixel full frame sensor camera. between
the kodak, a d200, a d300 and a d70 most of my frames were shot with the
d70. why? because of the size of the individual sensor sites on the
sensor. the lower megapixel count on the same sphysical size sensor of the
d200-300 means that there is a little less noise in the shadows of the
capture. i am so familiar with my d70 from years of use i know exactly how
it is going to perform in any given circumstance. here are a couple of
frames from the d70 that i shot last week. these are resamples straight
from the low res jpeg capture. not photoshopped raw images...
