88 b motor

i'm new to this newsgroup thing, but i have something i want to get off my
chest. i own a 2000 softail standard with 17,500 mile on it. on my way home
from work this past friday, the motor let go. i'm almost sure it has
something to do with the cams. i remember receiving a letter from
harley-davidson after i had the bike a year stating that their could be a
problem with the motor. as soon as i got home, i called my harley dealer and
explained my situation. the as much as said that there was nothing they
could do because there was never an actual re-call letter and besides it
only covered for 5 years or 50,000 miles. i am under the mileage, but the
bike is 8 years old. has anyone out there had any kind of dealings with
harley a long this line? i would sure like to hear from you. i don't know
what it would cost to fix this, but i don't know if i can come up with
money. there goes my summer of riding. thanks, butch...

My story:
I bought my 2000 FLSTS in November of 1999.
I also received the "warrenty extension letter(5 years/ 50K miles) somtime
later. In the spring of 2007 my cam bearings let go.
The bike had just under 40k miles then. The repair kit includes new
bearings and a new oil pump, they even have a part number for the kit.
The cost last spring was just short of $1000.00

Turns out the 99 that I just took in to fix a bad cam bearing had
already been replaced! Current mileage 11k, bearing replaced at less
than 3k miles. Rear cam outer bearing. Can't find a reason for the
failure.

Low lift cams (TW50).
Abused at install?
Mobile One oil?
INA branded bearing failed,
S&S supplied a BOCA (japan) replacement bearing in the gear drive kit.

It can't be fixed. Give me $100, and I'll haul it away for you.

You looking to buy more bikes? Thats going out on a limb, an old 88b
mtr with all them miles on it and running poorly to boot. I wouldn't
do it even if he gave me $500.

You may as well pay me to haul your new one away, no more than you ride it.
Can't believe you're afraid of a little weekend rain.<sfsf>
