HD Touring Mufflers Part #65259-00

*Free Drinks are at the End of the Message*

No, I do not want to talk about loud pipes. What I would like to talk
about is what the HD Touring Mufflers sound like.

Last December I picked up a low miler 2004 Road King. Great bike. I
have had a blast riding it and am looking forward to a terrific riding
season, cept for one minor issue.

The V&H Ovals on the bike are too loud for me. Don't get me wrong they
sound great, but for a long day on the road they are a bit too loud.

I have the opportunity to pick up some near new HD Touring Mufflers,
with the end caps for a pretty decent price. I am told they have a
deeper tone than stock and are loud enough to sound like a Harley
should sound, without pissing off all my neighbours.

I do spend long days roaming the highways and want to enjoy the last
few hours of the ride as much as the first. For me, too much noise for
extended periods detracts from the experience

Anyone here ever used them? What are your thoughts on the tone and
volume?

On the technical side would I have to remap if I swapped the Ovals for
the Touring? The bike has the Ovals and a SE High Flow air filter. I
am pretty sure the ECU (stock) has been mapped for the changes.

Right now the colour of my plugs indicate a near perfect burn. My
sense is this change would be relatively minor and would not
significantly alter the way the bike runs.

For all those wanting to debate the relative value of loud pipes you
can buy your own drinks and please change the subject header so I can
killfile the thread.

Others join me at my table for a shot and a beer, on me.

Yes. They are not all that loud and sound fairly pleasant to me (everyone is
different in what they like - I like quiet). The end cap used does influence
the sound on these mufflers. I always used the tapered end caps (rather than
the slash cut) as they seem to be slightly quieter than the other options.

I seriously doubt you are going to need a remap right off the bat. The
Screaming Eagle mufflers are a bit more restrictive than the "Ovals" so you
should be running slightly richer. You will also find the Touring mufflers
have a slightly better punch on the bottom end but don't flow as well at the
top of the Rev range. This may or may not be a probblem. It depends on how
you ride. I seldom wound my motor out so it didn't bother me at all. In
fact, I liked the added bottom end punch.

That is about it.

And that was very helpful. Thanks.

Tanks Dave. Since my last set of Jardines on the Antique Virago I have
preferred quieter pipes too.

Now if only those V&H Ovals didn't look so damn good. <g>

I've run them for a couple of years now and for the same reason.
I got tired of replacing the glass in the V&H Classics I was
running.

Not a bad muffler for a stock or mildly breathed on motor.
