Re: A good lifter

Hi all....

A round for anyone who wants any....

I've got what sounds like a ticking noise coming from my bike...its
been checked out with a stethoscope and the noise seems to be from a lifter.
Think the bearing may have gone south....anyway...thought someone could
recommend a brand for lifters that would be suitable....engine is built, so
I need an extremely durable type....

thanks for any advise...

Might help if we knew a bit more about your bike - year/model/engine type
... Evo's don't use the same lifter as TC's , nor do they use the same as a
Shovelhead or a Flathead .

Might not have any bad parts, re-adjust pushrods.

Excellent advice, assuming it has adjustable pushrods. Always start
with the cheapest possibilities first.

Another question; Did you make any changes not long before noticing
the ticking noise, or add a windshield?

I do have adjustable pushrods....so I definitely will start there...I've
actually taken the windshield off...not added it....I can't stand looking
thru that thing...
It was running fine all last year.... it gets stored in a heated garage
over the winter, but honestly it doesnt' like to start when its below 55 or
so.....so it never got started over the winter....I do change all fluids
each and every year before riding, and I only put about 3000 a year on
it...sometimes less....I did notice after I did everything, it ran very
smooth...then the noise just suddenly happened....
Thanks for the advise... I will check the adjustment on the pushrods
before I dig deeper....

I know a guy in the motor company that says Harley lifters are just fine.
Better than fine.

When I was having the engine work done, the mechanic, who is a certified
harley mechanic, told me harley lifters wouldn't hold up with all the power
the engine was making....

Lost the part where you spec'd your model, I'm assuming TC..

Harley lifters are fine as long as you are not running a high lift cam.
lifers don't care about power levels, but high lift, like over 520 can
test them. I use Crane 10530 or Sealed Power Chevy lifters that are half
the cost.

Lifters don't like dirty oil, if something is coming apart and there is
metal in the oil new lifters won't fix it for long.

Thanks Rick....I believe there is a set of cranes in there already.... I
change the oil after each season, which is abourt 3000 miles.

I run the Cranes myself. They were a good replacement for the first
gen
TC lifters. I understand the newer Harley "big axel" units are pretty
good
too.

Thanks Hoppy....I will probably go with a crane lifter if I have to go

I believe Harley learned it's lesson on the EVO's and there has not been
any change in the roller on the TC lifter.

There may have been a change in the "leakage rate" or "anti-pumpup"
spec, which would be set by internal clearances which is a minor tuning
kind of thing.

If you are running 20-w50 without an oil cooler that can add to any
trouble (especially car oils). The manual specifically states to use 60w
in ambient temps over 70 degrees. But that means you can't ride at night
without changing oil. The answer is a cooler....
