Bad roads

Bad roads

are a matter of opinion...

Have a wee pint o Guinness, or maybe a poke off this here Woodford's...

'Round here the trees are just starting to bud, there is still frost on the car a morning
or so a week, and the road surfaces are, let's say, interesting. The snowplows are
actually not all that fussy about what they plow, and the surface gets trashed. They pile
tons of sand and salt on the hills and corners in a vain effort to keep the tourists out
of the swamp, and the ricky racers all drive pickemup trucks with little regard for the
edge of the pavement, which destroys the margin and kicks rocks and shit onto the
pavement, mostly in the curves.

And that's the good roads.

Anyways... My daughter wanted to know what I wanted for Christmas for about $20, and I
mentioned a little flexible-arm camera mount gizmo. She bought it. I'm still getting the
whole setup dialed in, but my cheep little Sony Camera, the one with the gigabyte memory
stick, seems to do all right. I have a plan to deal with the focus shifting thing, but
until then, for your amusement, here's a little ride along:

This section is called 7 hills- The intermittent big stripe in the middle of the lane is
sand. Really nice, really lost beach sand. It gets more interesting after the first couple
minutes.

* uk.youtube . com /watch?v=ZAr3uMkq1BU

Several slugs and an Asshole have been on this next little section. At about the 30 second
mark you can see the first uphill righthander grin coming up. Right about the apex of the
turn, there is serious shit in the road (think Animal House- the scene with the marbles),
and a big assed truck coming the other way. Pretty exciting. The occasional farm implement
is no big deal, but does add a kind of Norman Rockwell effect.

* uk.youtube . com /watch?v=OoVE1-Iq4Jk

Three more clips from the same loverly ride.

* uk.youtube . com /watch?v=wHDlTRMK03E
* uk.youtube . com /watch?v=st4LzZIv4o8
* uk.youtube . com /watch?v=J83HnduYU6g

Thanks for riding along...

(snip the rest)

Dang. Several of my teeth jarred loose from just watching some of those
roads. <g>

I noticed something while watching those videos. I found myself starting
to cringe at each curve or when you met another vehicle. Apparently I'm
a victim of On-line Video Paranoia...more commonly known as 'OVP.' Seems
that nobody posts a motorcycle ride video without someone getting run
over by a produce truck or hitting a huge boulder or tree. Always a bit
of mayhem and destruction in them. It was pleasant to see a video in
which riders just rode. No crashes. (Not that I don't like to watch a
good crash now and then.)

Thanks for the visual take-along.

I noted the same, so I guess I'm a victim of OVP too. Can I get a grant or something?

It seemed that while watching the videos, there is information overload, but when riding,
I just take it all in and ride. The size of the visual field IRL is much larger (hence
more "information") yet less threatening. Perhaps the uncertainty, the lack of information
is responsible for OVP.

So if ignorance leads to paranoia, and ignorance is bliss, does bliss lead to paranoia?

Too much bliss can, I guess. Shiite, I need another cupa coffee. Shirley!!

Nah, it's typical of the internet...you're just over-thinkin' the
whole thing. Just watch and enjoy.

My feeling exactly, looked like the lead guy didn't mind the potholes
and the middle guy knew in advance where they all were.

I remember riding those roads, but not those particular *spots*.
I guess I'll have to come back and do it again.

It was a particularly wonderful ride, that Pauline & I reminisce
about. When we got into the UP, it was even more
spectacular because of the leaves changing colors.

A couple years back I sorta herded a motley assortment northwestish from EKIII. We didn't
get to ride some of the roads I'd hoped for due to faulty electronics (or someone's
inherent effect on electronical devices, hard to say which), but I'd like to try again
this year, so if you just happen to be headed that way...not that I have a pl@# or anything...

I'd like to see some of yer photos from said adventure, if not too much hassle.

From SNIFF to Florida, to NJ..
6 1/2 weeks for me.

Hell, I told you to take Route 13 and you went back to freakin' Gaylord.

But, since I am in debt, and you asked, here's the way I remember it:

* tinyurl . com /44tnue

or, for the tinyurl averse,

* maps.google . com /maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=100125101181292358248.00044d0c5345f4c041788

In case you were wondering, the little white vertical decorations atop the building are
table legs, hence the name.

Photographic evidence would indicate a most excellent ramble around the
country with absolutely first class company. You can't ask for more.
