Washing a filthy dirrrty bike

Reply from: Donna A.
Date: 13 May, 13:09
Okay, all this talk about washing bikes--well, *some* talk about washing
bikes--has got me thinking I should really take a coat or three of grime
off mine. Especially since she looks like a real pig sitting next to the
new Ultra CrowDog got on Saturday...

I need suggestions for HEAVY DUTY cleaners that will take off YEARS of
dirt, bugs, oil, and whatever else has come up off the highways and
byways of this great land and onto my bike. Wow, that was kind of
poetic, wasn't it? Lemme buy a round whilst I wipe a tear from my eye.

Waddya say? What's a good cleaner or two? Also, what do you all use for
cruddy chrome maybe with a bit of rust here and there?

TIA!

See if you can still buy Maguires (sp?) "three step" at your local auto
parts store. After a good old fashioned wash with soap and a dry - step
1 is a paint cleaner - step two a polish and step 3 a wax. Yep, it
means going over your bike at least eight times - wax on - wax off - but
then you can go down to the local dojo and kick some ass karate kid
style no?

I got this recommendation from Panhead many moons ago. Once done, the
process does protect the surfaces for a long time.

I'd use "Mother's" on the chrome - probably sold at your local HD shop.

Congrats to CrowDog on his new ride!

I'll check into that. I know it'll be a huge job no matter what and if I
got something that really cleaned it and protected it, I'd be better off
in the long run.

I remember that stuff.

He loves it--it's a 2007 with only 4100 miles on it. 96" twin cam with
the 6 speed transmission. He said it really flies compared to the old
'93 he traded in.

Go ahead an admit it, you're suffering from bike envy.

I keep Simple Green Automotive in the shop (not that I
use it on a regular basis). A gallon at the local auto mega
mart is as cheap as a quart spray bottle at wally world.
Don't know if there's a difference between it and regular
Simple Green, but it doesn't smell as loud. It works well
on oil & gas spills and does OK on bugs and road grime.
The wife likes to use it on her car as well. A word of
caution, they say not to let it dry on your paint.
Take their advice! Don't ask how I know this. I don't
know about chrome, I'm just too lazy to polish it.

We've used Simple Green before when CrowDog's bike blew a base gasket on
the way to Sturgis and the side got covered in oil. I'll check it out.
Thanks!

Simple Green and a variety of gentle brushes for everything but the
paint and windshield.

Do not scrub a windshield, just lay a hot wet towel over the screen to
soften bugs. Repeat as necessary, wipe side to side only, no circles or
up and down and no cleaners the screen.

See if you can find "5 Minute Detail" by Eagle, Meguire's has a similar
product works great on paint.

I like the chalky chrome polishes, there us some cotton/wool stuff that
works great on chrome or bare aluminum too. Careful that yo do not try
to polish coated aluminum!

I was thinking of getting some kind of brush for the gunky stuff below
the pipes and floorboards. Simple Green would probably work well on that.

I've done that with wet paper towels before. However, I think I'm just
going to get a new windshield since the current one is the original and
has a big crack starting to move up from the middle bottom. And it's
fairly cloudy.

Even filthy paint?

heh heh heh The coating wore off the aluminum a long time ago. I think
my wheels were once gold, too. 8-)

I stumbled onto some stuff called AeroShell Flight Jacket Plexicoat.
I got some when the wife was working in the flight school dept at the
local college. It's some good shit. Clean your windshield and then
apply the AeroShell. It'll make the windshield look new. Now the
disclaimer. My windshield was cracked and pretty junky. It has
the hard coat peeling in places and it still cleaned up good.

I'm old & lazy so I like a chemical that will remove the grime, but not
the paint. I'm also not going to go over a paint job 6 or 8 times to make it
shine. If it takes that much there probably isn't much shine left anyway. If
mine gets that dirty I grab a bottle of S-100, soak the bike down, & hose it
off. If I want more clean I'll wash it with dish soap & water, dry, & maybe a
coat of Turtle Wax.

S100! I forgot about that! I've used that in the past and it worked
through the bugs and grime pretty well. Thanks!

BTW, I'm lazy, too. I'm even wondering if I can hire somebody to do the
dirty work on this one. ;-)

I'm not as old, but I'm lazie faire..
so I let my dealer clean it every 20K or so.

But the S100 works great too.
And after everything's right where you want it,
if you're old-school, you'll get out the Pledge.

The last time I took my bike in they didn't even try. Since then I've
gone to an independent shop that a friend owns. I value his friendship
so I didn't ask him to clean it. 8-)

I'll probably end up with S100 and/or Simple Green. What do I have to
pledge to? [blonde head shake]

If I want my bike cleaner than that, I'll grab a beer, count to ten,
and get over it.
